       Being assessed for the first time. Level 7>6

       Hello all,
       New to the forum.
       Qualified as a referee in January and on Saturday I have my
       first Level 7 > 6 promotion pathway observation.
       Just wondering what to expect from the observation; particularly
       pre and post match. Is it customary for the ref being observed
       to reach out to the observer in advance of the fixture and
       introduce themselves?
       Thanks

       Hi there,
       For L7-6 and L6-5 promotions, they're typically not
       "observations" per se, but "Match Day Coaching Visits". They
       will come along and observe you, provide you with feedback at
       half (should you want it) and full-time. They then produce a
       sort of tick list report with different sections where they will
       make you in 3 ways:
       * Below Standard Expected
       * Standard Expected
       * Above Standard Expected
       They will also write 3 strengths in your performance and 1 Key
       focus for the next fixutre. They will also provide an overall
       summary at the bottom. They're not there to flame you if you
       make a mistake like an observer might, but they will help you
       see a mistake and tell you how best to rectify it or improve in
       the future. They're designed to help you kick on and improve
       constructively.
       As for reaching out to the observer... yes, yes and yes. Always
       make contact with them, tell them the venue, the time, when you
       intend to arrive and make sure you keep them updated with any
       and all changes in information about the game. If they turn up
       when the game has been called of, that's going down like a lead
       balloon and you may end up with a grumpy phone call/email.
       Hope this helps mate!

       In addition, come match time just be yourself. Referee as you
       normally would, don't try to change your style to try and meet
       what you think the observer may want to see you doing because
       what they really want is to see you as you normally are. Focus
       on the game & don't worry about what the observer might be
       thinking, if you make a mistake then so-be-it don't panic, don't
       lose concentration or focus. Don't be nervous, don't stress over
       it pre-match - at your level it's a learning experience, take
       whatever learning opportunities come your way. Good luck.

       All the best for tomorrow Craig Robson. I'm sure it will go well
       for you. Approach the match with the same calm frame of mind as
       does your SG1 namesake Mr Pawson approach his matches and you
       will surely do yourself justice.

       All the very best!
       You never know, in the future perhaps you will be the next regen
       of Michael Oliver… and will remember us mere mortals on RTR!
       Also, you’ll possibly come across our illustrious and
       distinguished roving reporter JCFC on your travels, whom will
       provide a scrupulously fair assessment of any match he casts his
       eyes over!
