Cricket pre season friendlies 2026

Looks like Nigel Llong was at Hove for the two day game v
Durham. The other umpire is indistinguishable due to him wearing
full gloves, full neck warmer and a hat! You can tell the
cricket season is near… it’s freezing!
The pitch looks bloody awful too!

The umpires listed were Mark Newell and Ben Peverall.
Newell is the brother of Mike Newell who used to play for
Nottinghamshire and Ben Peverall is a former National Panel
umpire from the West Country who was promoted to the full list a
couple of seasons back.
With all their garb on to protect them from the cold weather it
is difficult to tell. It’s quite crazy to be playing outdoors at
this time of year but because of the packed schedule, money
talks and they start earlier and earlier each year!

Many thanks for that. The only clue I had that it could have
been Llong was when that umpire signalled four… it looked very
Llong like.
I did wonder whether the ghost was in disguise at the other end
:-).

Surely the first umpire at Derby will be called up for service
in the current conflict and be unable to officiate?

I think the surnames at Trent Bridge adequately describe the
current US chap leading said conflict.

The championship season starts next friday, good friday. I think
a few might need their thermal suits on

As mentioned before from our esteemed fellow cricketing
observers, the season starting this early to accommodate the
trash that is the 15.4 over game defies belief. I wonder if a
first class cricket match has been delayed by a frozen pitch
before!
Call me old fashioned, but first class cricket over the four
days is the true version of the sport. I can accept the 50 over
game as a good variant, and I can just about tolerate the t20
fits and giggles stuff which is there for pure enjoyment on
concrete roads.
It’s a real shame the historical nature of this sport has
evolved into what it is today.

I once remember playing a local league game on may day bank
holiday monday during a hail storm, to say certain parts of the
anatomy were frozen was an understatement. Finished with a fat
finger after being unable to move my hands away from the ball
whilst in the field.
I seem to remember in the good old days of out grounds hosting
county cricket many years play was abandonded at Buxton due to
snow, also one day was lost during the pandemic at Headingley
due to a snow covered ground, think that was in april v
glamorgan.
