Straight red card for Valverde in the second half. How on earth
was this not overturned by VAR??

I think a red is harsh but Valverde seems to just kick him with
no intention of winning the ball...commentary mentioned the two
players involved had history and I'm guessing they were
referring to this

I wouldn’t say he kicked him like say Harry Wilson did against
Denmark. Deliberately fouled him yes, but they are routinely
only given as yellow. That’s a good point and may have been in
the back of the referee’s mind

I suspect the referee was too close and has seen something that
just didn't happen. Although that doesn't explain why VAR
didn't recommend a review, I can only assume the referee
explained it as exactly what happened and that wouldn't really
give VAR anywhere to go.
