2026/27 Elite and Emerging Panel Predictions
By: Marcus Date: March 18, 2026, 12:27 am
---------------------------------------------------------
For something to keep us all entertained during this quiet
cricketing patch- what are our thoughts as to changes (if any)
that will likely be announced in the next week or two?
To get the ball rolling, mine are:
Outs: nobody dropped, feel like there will be one retirement but
not sure who
In: I'm going with Sam Nogajski, maybe it's my Australian bias
but he had a near flawless World Cup, and the fact any retiree
is likely to be Australian or English perhaps gives him a slight
edge- that said both Madanagopal and Yaqoob seem solid umpires,
as noted during the World Cup Brown seems to have dropped off
For the Emerging Panel, Brown could be on his way out, if so and
with a promotion to the Elite Panel from elsewhere, my two to go
up are Koch and Reifer.

At present, it appears that there will be no changes in elite
panel members.
However, if there is an opportunity to introduce an additional
“Emerging Panel Umpire” I would propose considering either
Leiser Reifer or Roland Black as potential candidates.

I get a feeling that there will be no imminent changes to the
panel - it will be interesting to see what happens when Tucker
reaches 100 tests!
In terms of emerging group, I reckon Reifer is the front runner
on the basis that he was the only Non Elite/emerging umpire to
act as TV umpire in the T20 World Cup. Whether he would be an
addition to the panel or a replacement, I am less sure about!

Doubt there will be any elite umpire retirements, reckon they
would have been announced by now. Tucker has indicated that he
will seek a one- year contract extension so he can officiate his
100th test and then retire in 2027.
Slight chance Saikat could be dropped, on the basis that his DRS
stats were the worst of any elite umpire in last 12 months. He
also umpired less World Cup matches than a couple of the
emerging officials. But I think he’d be unlucky to be dropped
after 2 years when someone like Joel Wilson with way worse
numbers was given a lot longer.
So I reckon there’ll be no changes to elite panel in 2026 but
could be multiple retirements in 12 months time (Tucker,
Illingworth and perhaps Reiffel). For this reason I reckon
they’ll expand the emerging panel to 5 (there’s also a heap of
bilateral cricket in the next 12 months so more opportunities
for emerging umpires). My predictions are Reiffer and Koch ( or
maybe Black) to be added and Chris Brown dropped.

I also agree that they’ll be no changes to the elite panel this
year. I think there could be quite a few changes after next
years 50 over World Cup though (Illingworth, Tucker & Reiffel).
I reckon we’ll start to see Nogajski get quite a few test
matches and overseas ODIs in the next 12 months in preparation
for a spot on the elite panel in 12 months time.
For the emerging panel, Koch and Reifer seem the most likely to
be added. Personally I’d keep Chris Brown on it, but no on field
Super 8s appointment in the recent T20 World Cup suggests he
could be in trouble.
On a separate note, I really think it’s time the ECB looked at
their members of the International Panel. Non of them due to
their age have a chance of ever being on the elite panel. The
fact that non were appointed to the T20 World Cup suggests that
they’re also not rated by the ICC. I’d like to see the ECB
replace Saggers and Burns as they’ve been on the panel since
2020 with some younger blood such as Rob White, James
Middlebrook and Ian Blackwell.

I’m sure the new Umpires Manager at the ECB will have that in
mind.
Don’t be surprised to see changes coming.
ECB definitely need younger umpires on their International Panel
to give these new umpires a chance of reaching Elite level.

It’s Neil Bainton, he retired from umpiring at the end of last
season to become the ECB umpires manager.
