better he headed back before then, to a game that on paper was
likely to be one sided? If that’s not the reasoning I feel like
Busby has been let down

I 100% agree! This exact fixture has controversy just last
season, when it was a PL fixture! To put it into perspective,
here are the other teams we played that we also played in the PL
last season: (I know Leicester are towards the bottom of the
table but still)
Leicester (A): Tom Kirk
Southampton (H): Bobby Madley
Southampton (A): To be played
A fixture that had controversy last season in the PL, paired
with a referee that had controversy only weeks earlier. Really
poor and I do feel for Busby, I am sure he didn’t want to be
sent to PR so soon. I am sure he will be kept away from PR for
his own safety and wellbeing. Regardless of the fact he’s a
professional and does this as a career, this would’ve been
extremely distressing for him and I do feel for him massively.

Truly disgusting. I don’t think people realise these officials
do this for a job, a career, a living and have thoughts and
feelings as well. I can’t imagine these people posting this on
Social Media are perfect at their jobs either, so I have no clue
why they are sending threats to someone that’s made some
mistakes at his job. It’s like they think referees are robots.
I hope the PGMO and FA offer support to Busby and contact these
platforms and authorities to get these posts taken down.
I can’t imagine how Busby is feeling right now and my thoughts
are with him.

In no way am I excusing the actions of a minority of a fan base
but we have to honest this is a very poor decision by John Busby
and if he didn’t see it (as he has apparently stated) then what
on earth are AR1 and the 4O looking at? They should be helping
out the referee if he can’t see the incident (not blaming AR2 as
he would’ve been looking along the line for offside). It was a
very clear holding offence at the back post on Kipre by
Choudhury.
The events that follow are a shambles - there are no other words
for it. We are all frustrated by wrong decisions, but to
surround the referee in the manner the Ipswich players and
management staff did is ridiculously poor. I feel incredibly
sorry for John Busby if he felt his safety was under threat at
that moment. It should never have to take extreme measures like
this to protect the welfare of an official.
Today, I was not at Portman Road and neither was I following
events live in my flat but I was at the City Ground watching
England v Iceland in the Women’s World Cup Qualifiers at
12:30pm. The referee, Silvia Gasperotti (Italy), was someone I
had never come across before but I thought she put in a very
good performance. But the thing I noticed the most was the
respect that all the officials had by the players on the field.
A large majority of decisions were correct but any that the
players felt were wrong, there was a shrug of the shoulders
(saying ‘why?’) and then the referee would come over to the
player and explain her decision. This was a common occurrence
all afternoon and it was very refreshing to watch a football
game in such a positive atmosphere (that had no negativity in
the crowd) and was reflected in how the players played the game.
No dissent was shown and the players played the game in a good
spirit. At the end of the game, every player and member of the
management staff from both teams greeted the referee warmly at
the end of the game. The players respect for the referee was
there for all to see.
Unfortunately, this is a complete contrast as to what we see in
the Men’s game and certainly what happened at Portman Road
today. There’s no sense of respect for what the referees do on a
weekly basis and the level of effort it requires to do their
job. All we see is dissent, simulation, players doing all they
can to spoil the game and not play the game in a good spirit.
From what I saw today, it’s fair to say the Men’s game has a
very long way to close the gap to the Women’s game when it comes
to respecting match officials.
Every Ipswich player and management staff who confronted Busby
in an aggressive manner should take a moment and reflect on
their actions quite thoroughly.
I hope Busby gets all the support he requires if he felt in a
difficult situation at full time.

Unconfirmed reports from someone that I know who is part of the
security team at Ipswich suggest Mark Ashton (Ipswich
CEO/Chairman) was furious and was waiting at the official room
for Busby yesterday.
Obviously no official confirmation, but again really not helping
our case if he did. Really expecting (and hoping) a heavy fine
for Ipswich and a touchline ban for McKenna. If this doesn’t
happen, it no doubt will make other referees uncomfortable that
this behaviour is going unpunished.

I've watched the incident a few times now.
Firstly, from the limited angles I've seen it's not as obvious
a penalty as some are making out
Secondly, there is no way a 4O gives that from there, especially
as I don't think there's an angle
Thirdly, by the same argument, I don't think AR1 has a view. The
ball has moved from near them into the area and the incident
would have happened near to a very congested offside line
Which leaves the referee. He, unfortunately, was following
recent, common convention and was bang in the centre of the
field. By the time his head turned, the incident had happened.
My feelings of Mr Busby are well chronicled, but in this case I
don't think he could have seen it. Should he be wider - maybe,
should he have seen it - probably. But having not seen it, he
didn't guess
Unfortunately having had a recent, similar incident at that
ground against the home team, I can understand the anger, if not
how it was demonstrated
With VAR you would need more angles to see if the contact was
deliberate, my guess those behind the goal, to that side had a
great view!!

From the highlights, 10 minutes at best, there were several
penalty claims turned down. Reasonable calls in all 3 cases, but
the third, at the end of the game, may have been the last straw.
However, I am not convinced by the penalty claim and the referee
would have needed a clear view. IMHO, he gave what he saw which
was play on. Referee's decision is final but sadly we have lost
that element of the game.

I wasn't impressed with Busby when we had him the other week v
Coventry but there was absolutely no need for all the abuse he
got at the weekend.
Hope he's ok.

I agree with the posters about having a clear view of the
incident. It’s not easy to spot an incident at the back post
when a cross is coming in from the opposite wing. The likelihood
is that the actual offence occurs while the referee is turning
his head to view the penalty area. As he does, he sees two
players on the deck with no knowledge as to how either are
there.
That’s why I asked if 4O or AR1 could’ve helped out. As I said,
I’m not blaming the other AR as he’s looking along the line for
offside (and the incident was opposite side to him) but AR1 (who
would’ve been dugout side on the halfway line) must have had a
really good view of the incident. It’s those instances where
sometimes a referee needs a bit of help.
I’m not going to criticise Busby anymore though. I refereed a
game last year where there was a long throw which was flicked
onto the back post and an attacker went down with a question of
possible holding offence. I didn’t see it and I gave a goal
kick. So I’m no different to Mr Busby in that regard. As ever,
it’s always easy to post on here and be critical but it’s a
tough job when you’re out there with your AR’s in front of 29000
people. If the referee doesn’t see an incident then
unfortunately (certainly for Ipswich supporters this weekend)
nothing can be done.

McKenna has stated in his press conference (for the game
tomorrow night) that Martyn Pert (ITFC Assistant Manager) spoke
to Kevin Friend, who said they should have been given two
penalties during the match.
I guess come 4pm today we will see what sort of action (if any)
has been taken against Busby. Although, I wouldn’t go straight
to make the assumption if he doesn’t have a game it’s because of
that, but possibly for his own wellbeing.
Still awaiting to hear if any action will be taken against
McKenna and Ipswich.
