John Busby - Ipswich vs Leicester
By: HChip Date: March 7, 2026, 11:12 am

His performance was poor but Ipswich’s reaction at the end was
inexcusable.
Referees at Ipswich usually have 2 security personnel escorting
them off at the end as regular procedures, but extremely
distressing scenes when 9-10 extra security guards were rushed
in to pull Busby free.
Disgusting from Ipswich, as much as his performance wasn’t the
best of standards, no referee should ever be put in that
position. I doubt we will see Busby at PR again, more for his
own safety. No doubt fines and possibly bans to be issued.

I went to watch this as well as a neural.
A horrible stop start first half that frustrated everyone but
actually don’t think Busby did a lot wrong.
Second half was a bit more flowing and some big calls for
penalties.
Unfortunately the one decision at the end will be what his
performance will be remembered for, and suspect by reaction of
the Ipswich bench it should’ve been a penalty.
But agree shocking behaviour by players, staff and fans.

I think this performance from Busby may be slightly better than
when we played Preston (H) but still not a good standard.
As much as I am an Ipswich fan, I hope McKenna gets suspended
because that was ridiculous. I saw Busby being physically pulled
by several Pitch Protection Security members and that is unheard
of at Ipswich.

Ipswich should get heavily sanctioned for there reaction at full
time. The amount of security Busby needed was ridiculous

From someone in the ground and as a referee myself that was
awfully distressing. Seeing security urgently requesting and
asking for more of their own and then seeing Busby emerging.
Absolutely disgusting from McKenna and his team. Referees are
humans too. Not to mention the stuff I’ve seen about Busby on
social media.

Points deductions would help to nip these sort of scenes in the
bud, fines mean nothing.

Haven’t seen the penalty incident or the scenes that you
describe.
If Ipswich have behaved in the manner that you say, then some
bans and punishment would be deserved.
Social media is just a horrible horrible place. Many things said
on there shouldn’t be taken literally.
There is no excuse for excessive manager behaviour but I have
hardly ever known Kieran McKenna to be as angry and annoyed as
you describe. If he was as annoyed as that, then I suspect the
wrong decision was made.
In hindsight, it was an incredibly poor appointment by the
refereeing officers. To send someone back to a place where he
had a stinker just over a month ago is really poor man
management.

Here is a screenshot of Busby’s escort.
To put it into perspective, all referees get 1-2 security
officers escorting them as a regular procedure.

It seems such a logical and easy thing to impose instead of
meaningless fines but it isn't going to happen.

I wonder why Busby was sent back to Ipswich after a
controversial game not too long ago? Are the powers that be
considering him for another playoff game and decided it was
better he headed back before then, to a game that on paper was
likely to be one sided? If that’s not the reasoning I feel like
Busby has been let down
