Off topic as well but I have to ask a question…
Why is the game ‘gone’ at the elite level?
Is because of referees? Is it the implementation of VAR? Is it
the playacting of players and managers to an extent? There are
many question as to why but let’s remind ourselves of something.
Why was VAR introduced? It was because the fans, the players,
the managers and the boards all wanted it because to put it
simply, they didn’t trust the referees at the time. Howard Webb
openly says that they’re in dialogue with clubs all the time. Is
there anything they want to change? Is there a rule that needs
adapting? That’s why there are different interpretations of
things all around the world. Referees are there to do a job.
They’re there to protect the players and enforce the rules. We
don’t know whether Joao Pinheiro actually wanted to give the
foul and yellow card. All we know is he enforced the laws that
he is told to enforce. I recall a certain quote by Wayne Barnes
“It might be a bad law but it’s the law”. That sentence could be
applied to many laws in football.
The game is not “gone” because a referee gave a red card for an
incident. The game is gone because of the antics of players and
managers who are demanding change on a seasonal basis which
makes it impossible for any level of consistency.
I refuse to believe the game is gone because of a decision made
by a referee who is there to uphold the laws of the game.

The examples you give of why the game is ‘gone’ are correct. But
you also need to hold blame at the feet of IFAB and the local
refereeing bodies. IFAB are after an exact science. Local
refereeing bodies (PGMOL as example) are then creating their own
guidance, which confuses people (referees included) and changes
like the wind.

If VAR had not interveened on the decision and it had just been
a 2nd Yellow Card, I wonder how contentious this decision would
have seemed.
Appreciate VAR needs to determine whether it is 2Y or straight
red to determine bans etc, but it feels like if VAR had done
nothing, the 2nd Yellow, whether right or wrong could have
fallen into the 'seen them given bracket's, but sometimes feels
like VAR process doesn't help itself

I thought the second yellow was very harsh but I could just
about accept it as I could justify he knew he was there which
would mean a move from careless to reckless. But football's a
contact sport and to me there isn't enough brutality or force to
come into serious foul play or violent conduct. I accept it
would have hurt but I don't think we should be giving reds for
that. The second yellow right at the end of Atalanta v Dortmund
had a lot more force and caught a player on the napper.
Generally that decision seems to have been accepted (granted
I've not read anything on this forum about it!) But anyone
telling me this was more dangerous is kidding themselves.

My view on this is the second yellow was extremely harsh, the
straight red was a debacle that doesn't reflect well on the
officials or football as a whole.
Two things for me. Firstly Kelly is nudged whilst in the air,
if you are off the ground it is hard enough to control your
landing, if you are then knocked off balance it is utterly
impossible. The second is that he lands on the opponent's leg
that is already moving forward, and that makes it look worse as
he "rides" the leg. It was 100% an accident, and if UEFA are
saying that is a yellow card, let alone a red card, they are
saying that no one is allowed to jump for the ball because you
could land on an opponent.

Obviously unlikely but what would have happened if the referee,
after reviewing the incident on the screen, actually decided
that it shouldn't have been either a RC or a 2YC (which he had
already given) and that it was an accidental collision? Is he
allowed to overturn his original decision (under the current VAR
rules) given that he has only looked at the screen because of
the potential upgrade to RC?
This is obviously where it is unfair that a RC can be downgraded
on review but a 2YC can't be. Presumably this will be voted
through at the weekend meeting. However it still won't cover the
unfairness where a 2YC is given but the 1YC was an error.

On the issue of "giving a player a nudge in the back" I think at
the weekend there were 2 PL matches where goals were ruled out
for offside from freekicks but the only reason the attacker was
offside was because just before the ball was played they had
been pushed into the offside position by the defender. Obviously
VAR was correct to rule out the goals for offside but why aren't
they spotting these obvious pushes and advising the freekicks
should have been retaken?

Yes, he could have.

It has to be a clear and obvious error to send the referee for a
review, but once there they can pretty much take whatever
decision they want

I don't think fans did want it. Not the majority I have spoken
to anyway. It was a gimmick pushed by media, pundits and
administrators taking further control from normal football
match-goers
