Juventus vs Galatasaray - João Pinheiro POR (VAR - Tomasz

I'm still trying to process all the decisions made here. The
collision was accidental but from a yellow to straight red is
strange indeed!

Presumably, the VAR must have sent the referee to the monitor to
consider a straight red card instead of a second yellow. A
shocking decision in my view. Eyes were on the ball and, on
landing, the contact with the opponent's leg was purely
accidental. Where else was he supposed to land? I hope some
action is taken.

I think most people in the football world would say it’s a
terrible decision. As a certain Mr Neville would say “There’s a
smell of the game…”. I don’t like this decision either but when
you consider it objectively there is some sort of reasoning
behind it.
Firstly, the point of contact - it’s up on the back of the ankle
on the Achilles area
Secondly, excessive force(?) - obviously there’s no intent and
completely accidental but the Juventus player has jumped high
off the ground to win the ball so when he comes back down to the
ground, he’s coming down with force. Rather than land on the
ground, he lands on the Gala players ankle/achilles which is
seriously going to hurt. The weight/force coming down from a
jump is quite large and that has to be a consideration.
As I said, I seriously don’t like the decision but I can kind of
see the reasoning. An onfield decision of Yellow Card I could
accept but to be a straight red feels rather harsh.

Absolutely bonkers decision. A 2nd yellow is one thing, but to
then upgrade it to red is beyond belief.
Point of contact is Achilles, yes. But that’s just as much in
the ‘fouled’ player as it is Kelly. Kelly’s leg doesn’t move in
an unusual way to suggest any malice. He is literally just
landing after going up for a header.

Excessive force from jumping too high?
The games gone! Running too fast or kicking the ball too hard
will be next!

I was trying to be logical. I said I didn’t like the decision.
Anyway, I don’t think you’d like it if a player landed on your
Achilles from jumping high. The force from that could cause
really serious injury.

Kelly's leg does move in an unexpected way.
I didn't watch this live, so caught up today on the furore. The
way it is being described is not what occurred. Kelly initially
jumps in a straight line, and then extends his right leg in an
unexpected way - coming down heavily on the opponent's leg.
The way it is being described makes it seem like a straight jump
up and down, which it wasn't.
Now - if you're giving yellow, then it's wrong. If we're
considering it as a sanctionable foul then it isn't yellow -
it's red. It's well above disregarding safety - it's observably
endangering safety.
It's an interesting debate to be had, but it's certainly not the
vanilla decision some are making it out to be.
Most debate online seems to be missing how VAR operates however.
UEFA - and other FAs - expect wrong second yellows (missed
reds) to be reviewed on the pitch and corrected. It matters for
the periods of the ban.
The same would also be true of a wrong straight red, that can
and should be corrected to a 'correct' 2YC. I appreciate fans
don't love that (as they get excited about the prospect of a
reprieve only to still lose their player).
The way to fix that would presumably to make the VAR message and
purpose for review more clear (i.e. VAR review - potential
upgrade of 2YC to RC; or potential downgrade of RC to 2YC).

HIs opponent makes no attempt to jump for the ball, however,
once Kelly is in the air, the opponent gives him a slight push
which meansthat Kelly is off balance and can't avois the leg
movement because he wants to make a safe landing.
Every time you are contesting a ball in the air, all you need is
a thumb in your back and it knocks you off balance, something I
learned many years ago from Jim Langley when he was manager at
Hillingdon Borough. It was a ploy I also used and it was very
rarely spotted by any official.
Kelly actually received the push to his midriff and his landing
was always going to be off balance, at no time did he look at
his opponent, his eyes remained on the ball.
It could be argued that his opponent, by not jumping for the
ball and pushing his opponent whilst he was in the air, was
reckless and causing a danger to his opponent.
Of course, the easy answer to all of this would be to ban
heading of the ball and this situation would never arise.
I agree with Nemesis ---the game really has gone at the 'elite'
level.

Off topic, but this makes the case for disallowing the Spurs
goal in the NLD last Sunday very well.

He gets knocked off balance whilst he’s in the air, so he had to
adjust his legs to make sure he lands safely without breaking
his ankles. Jump up in the air, ask someone to push you and see
if you can stick a perfect pencil landing……
