John Beaton. Aberdeen V Motherwell

A busy night for Mr Beaton with 3 red cards, two after VAR
interventions. The first two are nailed on red cards, one for
DOGSO and another for SFP however I think the 3rd one is harsh
given distance from goal and the potential covering defenders.
This is one of the VAR reviews, would be interesting to hear
people's opinions. (Hope the link works.)

yeah i'm not convinced this is dogso (or a clear and obvious
error) given the 40 ish yards to run before he gets a shot away

I think if the referee had gone red on-field it would be
supportable, but with the on-field decision being a caution I
don't think it's a clear and obvious mistake for the VAR to be
getting involved with.

I think the red card for Austin Trusty in the Hearts v Celtic
game a few weeks ago - and the subsequent fallout from that -
has subconsciously been on the mind of Scottish officials
recently. Liam Henderson was sent off for Falkirk on Saturday
for a similar incident to the second Motherwell red card last
night. Yellow card given onfield and upgraded to red after a VAR
review.
Too far from goal for either of them to be DOGSO for me, but if
a red card had been given on field it would probably be
supportable. Feels like VAR re refereeing an incident in my
opinion.
EDIT - the first two red cards last night were both the correct
decisions so good refereeing to give the first one on field and
good use of VAR to upgrade the second.

I don’t follow events north of the border in as much detail as
our venerable contributors above, but even I heard a lot of
noise around the Trusty debacle and I can well imagine that an
incident like that would ruffle some feathers in other quarters
following on.

As a Motherwell fan, at the time I felt more of a grievance on
the first red card than the second as I thought the ball was
rolling through to the 'keeper and the defender clearly slipped
(I know that's not a mitigation in the LOTG but given a bit of
dubiety on the DOGSO I felt he could have been given benefit of
the doubt). However I've seen a wider angle of that today and
Cameron is 3 times closer to the ball at point of contact than
Connelly so I therefore grudgingly accept the referee was right.
The Aberdeen one is a straight kick in balls, it actually again
happens because the ball takes a strange bounce on the pitch but
there is no leeway if you go in with that intensity.
For me the third one is DOGSO - Olusanya is rapid and the two
guys coming from wide are so wide I don't see how he doesn't get
a decent shot away. It's been very clear for me getting a shot
that's got a reasonable chance of going in has been the bar for
weeks and this likely meets it. That being said, I don't think
the yellow was clearly wrong either so while I think it's more
red than yellow, I don't think there is enough there for a VAR
intervention so in that way I think we've been unlucky.
I thought we had a decent penalty claim later on in the game
which could have made things interesting but in the end we lost
two guys as a result of one of our players over or under hitting
the ball and the decisions while subjective, weren't clearly
wrong - we can only blame ourselves we were in that position and
then got beat.
