Lewis Smith - Burton v West Ham

Haven’t watched the game, but have turned on for extra time.
West Ham goal - nice advantage in the build up.
Red card - interesting one. Challenge goes in and Smith
immediately pulls out the yellow card. Players surround him,
card goes away and he takes a look at the felled player.
Decision changed to red card. For me, the red card is
supportable as it’s a poor challenge and I can only assume input
from his assistant. However, pulling the yellow card out so
quickly only to change it to a red looked messy.

Reminds me of the Hibbert sending off when Clattenburg pulled
out the yellow then went red.
I think it’s definitely a red as he could have easily caused a
serious knee or ankle injury.
VAR wouldn’t come in to override.

Whoever has had involvement there (AR or 4th) has really helped;
definite red card

I thought the contact was with the player’s foot rather than the
ankle?? Looked a bit harsh. Burton have a bit of a habit of
charging at the referee in circumstances like that.

Like Hallam yesterday I think he's been absolutely fantastic.
Another referee who has to be in SG1 next season. I can't for
the life of me think of a reason for why he hasn't had a trial
game yet this season. Composed and consistent throughout.

Now that he is in the Supplementary Select Group I can only
assume that he is behind Farai Hallam and Tom Kirk. Having seen
Hallam and Kirk a couple of times this season I can quite
understand why. There was certainly a potential SFP incident
Lewis Smith missed at Middlesbrough earlier in the season.

It's the scissor motion rather than where the leading leg
landed, it was extremely dangerous.

Burton should have had a penalty when Mavrapanos barged their
forward in the back.
