FC Barcelona v Liverpool: Bjorn Kuipers

I’m surprised there’s no thread on the performance of the
Referee in this game and the lack of VAR reviews. I hesitate to
actually comment on the officially appointed Referee as it
looked to me that Senor Messi was in control.
From my vantage point in the clouds at Camp Nou I was surprised
there was no VAR review for the early challenge on Mane which
looked like a penalty kick. I’ve only seen a brief replay on
Spanish TV and think it should have been a penalty but isn’t
this what VAR is for?
I’m not sure why Messi was indulged when his ridiculous barrel
rolls down the touch line and his delaying the restart were
completely ignored by the Referee who seemed somewhat star
struck.
However the worst decision was the free kick from which Messi
scored. Video on Twitter shows that Messi not only jumps into
Fabinho but also lands a punch to his head. Why wasn’t VAR used
for a clear red card offence? It was also very kind of the
Referee to allow the free kick from nowhere near where the
alleged offence took place to make it better for Messi although,
even though it’s the Referee’s job, Liverpool players needed to
be a bit more aware there.

I wasn’t impressed with Kuipers and not for the first time
though I suspect if Lee Cattermole or Joey Barton had punched a
player like Messi did they’d be having three games off
retrospectively. UEFA won’t ban the biggest name from their
flagship competition though, will they?
Incidentally, Messi is a fabulous player.

It looked to me like there might well have been an offside in
the build-up to the Liverpool penalty claim so perhaps that was
one reason for VAR not intervening.

I assume you support Liverpool? 🤪
I actually thought Kuipers had a good game and contributed to a
great spectacle. I have always been a fan and consider him to be
the best Ref in Europe at present. If you are going to question
the the poor use of VAR look no further than the previous round
versus Porto when Salah was guilty of a disgusting studs up
challenge with which he got away and so was free to play on
Wednesday. Swings and roundabouts. Spurs 3rd goal v City in the
last round could have been cancelled due to handball but the
luck of the green went their way.
I gather too that some Liverpool fan is trying to get a petition
up to get a retrospective ban for Messi and maybe have the 3rd
goal annulled. Desperate measures indeed.
The bottom line is that VAR is still a work in progress and we
are going to see more controversy and difference of opinion
before the thing begins to settle down

Nice avoidance of answering the question and a very interesting
logic, 'In a different round they didn't use VAR, so they're not
going to use it in this round.' Since when did 2 wrongs make a
right?

Kuipers went to blow for it and then just decided not to.

Yes I am a Liverpool fan, that’s why I was at Camp Nou. It’s
also why I’m giving an opinion on a game I watched live. I’m not
a fan of VAR regardless but to have it and then say it still
raises controversy is ridiculous. I thought that’s what it’s
there to prevent. You may have noticed I’m commenting on the
Referee and not complaining about the result, disappointing as
it was to me. Online petitions sound like someone screaming for
attention but the tools to allow the officials to get the
correct decision were there but not used.
VAR won’t prevent a Referee indulging a clear act of simulation
and delaying the restart by Messi. The Referee allowed Barcelona
to get away with what was often referred to as the “dark arts”
and failed to deal with several incidents properly, for example
Suárez kicking the ball into the net just before half time or
taking no action on the very poor challenge that ended Keita’s
season.
As for the third goal his award of a free kick to Barcelona when
Messi clearly punched Fabinho should have been referred to VAR
or there’s no point having it. If you’re in doubt about what the
Referee would have given take a look at his sending-off of Lazar
Markovich at Anfield against Basel in about 2015. One of the
most laughable dismissals you’ll ever see. I’m not convinced
with Kuipers at all.
As a mere fan who paid (a lot) of money to be at the game I
don’t even know if the challenge on Mane was referred to VAR but
if not, why not?
Regarding Salah against Porto I haven’t seen it on television so
can’t comment. I know that in the ground nobody seemed aware of
it, certainly not where we sit.

Just for Scally Bob. This is what you and other Liverpool fans
missed in the Porto game but damning evidence caught on camera.
Pundits are in no doubt as to what the punishment should have
been.

As regards the Mane penalty appeal, I think, as Reading Fan
suggests, there was an offside from a previous pass just before
the incident. Even the commentators mentioned it. Maybe VAR did
look at it, noted the offside so didn't pursue it.
I've seen Kuipers have some excellent games but I didn't feel
this was a top performance. Not poor by any stretch of the
imagination but I just felt he was a bit too lenient at times.
Only seen 1 replay of the free kick award for the foul on Messi
but it somehow didn't look a straightforward incident and
decision. What a goal from that free kick though! Liverpool
had their chances, particularly Milner, but they ought to be
thankful it only ended 3-0. If Barcelona had taken theirs from
fast counter attacks in the last few minutes, it could have been
5 or 6.

Yes, Mane was offside so not much point delaying the game to
review the challenge.
VAR does seem to have a weakness when it comes to red cards in
UEFA/FIFA games - I can think of many incidents that it has
missed. I am a big fan of the concept of VAR in general though.
I think Kuipers has been one of the best referees of his
generation.

It did look as though he may have been offside though the camera
angle isn’t great. If he was though why play on when the ball
was pinging about the Barcelona penalty area?
