I have been too negative this weekend, good use of var there to
award the penalty for Bournemouth

Really not convinced that was a clear error not to award a
penalty. It looked like simulation in real time and whilst there
was contact, the Bournemouth player played for it with no
intention of scoring a goal. Think it’s one of those that VAR
should go with on field decision either way.
Nice to hear Tierney on the mic for the first time, I expected a
stronger Wigan accent!

Good call for an OFR by JG to rescind a dive and award an AFCB
PK. Clearly and obviously was not a dive and contact was made
meaning it was an error by PT, seeing his angle at which he was
at in real time im not surprised he thought it was a dive so
perfect use of VAR.
Considering that was his 1st ever announcement I thought it was
very clear and concise.

Got his first decision incorrect, looked at monitor for 2
minutes and got the 2nd decision wrong
No penalty, no caution for me
Player was never getting to the ball if there hadn’t been
contact

Think this is spot on. Tierney was in a really poor position to
determine whether it was a dive or not, maybe he had the AR in
his ear.
Once you see the replay, I think a penalty has to be given.
Clear contact on the thigh and I’ve seen goalkeepers give away
penalties for much much less. I do think the attacker is
expecting the contact which is why it might seem like simulation
but the contact is there so I think Gillett was well within his
rights to intervene.

Yes there is contact but I don't think the contact has impacted
the attacker playing the ball as he wouldn't of got there before
it went out of play.
I would rather Tierney just gave a goal kick and played on, not
a foul or simulation for me.

Considering we’re told if a higher threshold in the penalty
area, I’m not having that as a penalty. I’d be most comfortable
with goal kick, but I’d say it’s closer to dive than it is foul.

Not a dive, but not a penalty either

If Tierney had given nothing then that probably would have been
the right outcome.
Unfortunately when he cards the player for diving, he’s in a
predicament because when VAR comes in and suggests a review for
a penalty, he has to reverse the simulation caution, but then he
has to give the penalty as there was no simulation, but contact.
An interesting situation.

Totally agree.
Was a similar situation when Ouattara was booked for simulation
in Brentford v Newcastle by Stuart Attwell. It wasn’t a dive
because there was contact but interestingly the VAR that day,
Paul Tierney by coincidence, didn’t intervene.
This decision was listed on the BBC Sport article on wrong KMIs
this season. It was a 0-5 vote by the independent panel on the
referees onfield decision and 2-3 on VAR intervention.
I think this scenario is incredibly similar.
