Sunderland v Crystal Palace - Rob Jones

Poor today, very inconsistent and when combined with pointing at
the ball rather than signalling his decisions it was impossible
to work out what was going on. I’m sure Palace fans will rightly
have their complaints as well but to me the big 2 decisions
were:
Adam Wharton not getting a 2nd booking the foul alone was 2nd
yellow card worthy but then he doubled it up with clear and
obvious dissent that wasn’t penalised, as I said in the
discussion last week with Man Utd the inconsistent application
of this is incredibly frustrating.
Sunderland penalty appeal - a clumsy barge in the back with no
intention of playing the ball and anywhere else on the pitch is
given as a free kick

.....about eight minutes from full time there was a collision
between a Palace forward and Sunderland defender Omar Alderete
which ended up with our defender injured.I sit behind the North
Stand goal where the incident occurred and whilst it looked like
a flailing arm or hand it was purely unintentional when the
contact came.
Alderete lay on the pitch for a few seconds and the referee
waved on our physio however what happened then was the player
got up and pointed at his lower jaw and cheek area where the
contact had taken place and he didn't need treatment.
The referee insisted he had a head injury and made him leave the
field of play even though he jogged off without any assistance
however this left us one man down for thirty seconds.
What a silly silly thing to do by the referee.

Once the referee authorises treatment the player has to go off,
it doesn't matter whether any treatment actually occurs.

Just saw the penalty shout. Not a clue how that wasn’t given.

It sounds to me that the problem was the rushed decision to wave
them on rather than that was wrong in law.
There was one point though that a palace had to leave the field
of play to change equipment but that wasn’t actually enforced,
it was a weird game, he had some good games previously at the
SoL so definitely an exception

Not seen the particular incident you’re referring to, but from
what you’re saying, referees always will err on the side of
caution when it comes to anything head related

What is Robert Jones. A high quality referee or a medical
professional ?

A referee which is why he quite rightly handed over any decision
regarding a potential head injury to the team medical staff…
As for a player saying he is fine, how many times has that (or
any) player looked a referee in the eye and claimed to have not
touched a ball and the throw in/goal kick/ corner should be
their ball etc. Sending players off to the sidelines to get
treatment and stay off the pitch for 30 seconds was primarily
brought in to stop all the feigning of injuries. Player
originally went down with an indication of a potential head
injury. If he wasn’t injured then he’s got no one to blame but
himself, no referee is going to take a chance with a potential
head injury, the risks are simply not worth it

He has visited us twice this season before today and to be
honest I have no qualms whatsoever in his general performances
beforehand but he was [WITH GREAT RESPECT] just a little off
form today.
I am sure he will be the first person to acknowledge that and
wherever his next appointment is there will be a marked
improvement.

A referee which is why he quite rightly handed over any decision
regarding a potential head injury to the team medical staff…
[/quote]
Which he then overruled.
He ordered the player to leave the field without our medical
staff ever entering before then allowing play to restart after
giving the ball back to our goalkeeper.
To be honest rightly or wrongly it just looked so very very
messy.
