Completely and utterly agree with you. The problem is that the
‘what the game expects’ excuse is dragged out any time
justification is needed for a rather poor decision.
If it was up to me, the phrase would be banned.
Just as a side note on the glancing blow excuse; it reminded me
of the challenge below (40 seconds in). High, late challenge,
but a rather glancing blow.

lunge, both feet off the floor and using a hell of a lot of
force. The Dalot one was a slightly mistimed stretch for the
ball with one foot, making a comparison there is comparing
apples with oranges.

Simple solution players will have to start wearing knee guards
under their turned over thigh highs ( cant call them socks
nowadays ) and not just those very small shin pads in order to
protect themselves.

A hell of a lot of force? He brushes his leg in the same way
Dalot did. Dakota challenge actually made Dokus leg buckle. The
incident I shared although ends up tripping rather than
buckling.
The only people who don’t believe this challenge to be a red
card is a section of referees. Normally with incidents that have
an element of controversy, there will be a split across
pundits,ex-players/referees. But on this one, I am still yet to
see any of those say it wasn’t a red card. There does get to a
point within referees that the arrogance and/or defensive nature
ends and we actually listen to what people are saying. Yes there
is a fine balance with that due to a lack of law knowledge, but
I don’t think you fully need to understand law to look at a
challenge and think red/yellow

Michael Owen thought yellow card and it is inaccurate to say all
ex pros thought it red. Last night on match officials mic'd up
Webb persuasively argued that the referee's call was correct.
The United player made a genuine attempt to play the ball and
actually made contact. The follow through was from an almost
stationary position and therefore without excessive force. Full
speed replays support this. In fact I am not sure if I would use
the word reckless in the strictest sense. A misjudgement yes, a
painful outcome but hardly violent. Yellow yes and for clear
reasons.
I felt Taylor's response when VAR supported his call was
amusing. A little stuffy, irritated perhaps as if to say how
could you question my decision? It suggests that it would take a
strong VAR to challenge an onfield decision taken by Taylor!

maybe I’m wrong but I thought Taylor was just trying to tell the
players that var confirmed his assessment

Webb backed his FIFA official and who wouldnt in his position.
So now if you make a genuine attempt to play the ball you cannot
be guilty of SFP very interesting. Surely its the challenge that
endangers an opponents safety not the outcome of the challenge.

There were others and the inference that all ex pros felt it was
a red card is clearly wrong. Gary Lineker disagreed with Alan
Shearer for example. Howard Webb has explained the reasoning and
we have to accept it, like it or not, and hope it is applied
consistently but it is a grey area and there will be some
incidents that fall just one side of the line or the other.
Sadly ex Pros are still unsure of the Laws and the relevant
guidelines.
