I'm surprised that it has taken this long in the season for a
clanger to happen due to the electronic teamsheet methods that
were introduced within the National League System. Things can
only get better!

When did paper teamsheets cause such hardship they needed
changing? An answer to a question nobody asked?

Typical genius blaming the officials. Not everything can be our
fault

Don’t think the clubs or officials come out of this looking
particularly good

The officials have to take their share of the blame. Yes it is
down to the clubs to fill in the team sheets correctly, but it’s
down to the officials to check.
It’s not as though this is grassroots where players potentially
have a different number every week. They all have their own
squad number and name on the back

But you are forgetting the golden rule of football management
"everything that goes wrong is the fault of the match officials"

Just out of interest - who fills out the digital version of the
team sheet?
I'm remembering that recent-ish scenario where a member of the
coaching staff had handed a 4O a pice of paper saying #x to be
substituted and didn't realise until after the substitution they
had given him the wrong number, by which point it was clearly
the 4O fault for not realising the coach had written the wrong
number and their best player had been subbed off and was not
allowed back on because the 4O was so unreasonable... * removes
tongue from cheek * The hoohah died down very quickly when that
slip of paper showed the coach/member of his team had given the
4O the wrong number as opposed to the 4O programming the board
wrong as they tried to claim initially

I am a bit confused by this. Did the fourth official not ask
for the player’s name and check his shirt number against his
list before allowing him onto the pitch? Surely that’s standard
procedure; I do it every time.
I have only once encountered a situation where an unlisted
player attempted to come on, and he wasn’t allowed to. It turned
out to be an administrative error by the manager, who had only
entered four of his five substitutes’ names on the team sheet.
Since then I always clarify the number of substitutes at the
team sheet exchange whenever not all slots are completed.

The problem is, at this level, the clubs will just pass a card
to the 4O containing the number of the player to go off and the
player to come on. The vast majority of officials don’t take out
the team sheet with them as 4O, so they don’t have anything to
check it against.
When I was on the National League, I was always pretty strict
with myself on this stuff and would always take some form of
copy out with me. Then I could check anything I needed and also
had a copy of names of people.
Ultimately this is the fault of the club, but the officials
certainly aren’t blameless.

The clubs also enter the number into the board.
