Ultimately I think they have eventually got to the correct
decision. However, it should not be taking anywhere near this
long to make a decision. If the technology isn’t up to scratch,
they need to bin it. If they have to go back to basics either
the lines, I’d much rather a time limit was put in place. VAR
was in no way brought in for people to sit round for 6+ minutes
whilst a decision is made.

I wouldn't say it was "clearly" offside. It looked to me as if
there was not only the offside against the defender to consider
but possibly also against the goalkeeper, as Haaland may well
have been goal side of him. I guess if they decided it was
offside against the defender they wouldn't need to look at the
latter. As Haaland didn't appear to touch the ball, and offside
for interference hadn't been given on the field, it had to be a
subjective decision and an OFR, didn't it?
If there was an equipment failure, it still took too long but
more understandable.

They need to fix the technology, that is a given. But a time
limit would be a really bad idea, people don't work well when a
clock is ticking on them and that would just lead to even more
mistakes. For all it took a long time they looked very calm, I
can guarantee they wouldn't look calm if a 2 minute countdown
was ticking down over their heads.

Always have and always will. So I don’t see why it needs to be

They’re going down the route of having specialist VARs, so they

> Don't listen to the commentators, despite them repeatedly
saying the check was for interfering with Pope it was clearly
for interfering with Thiaw, who Haaland was in physical contact
with and effectively had pinned. If Haaland was in an offside
position that has to be offside.
>
> But yet again SAOT has failed and they had to resort to
drawing lines, and based on how far those lines showed Haaland
as being offside compared to what the Sky cameras appeared to
show I am far from convinced it was correct. It doesn't seem to
cope if there is any kind of crowded situation, yet the same
technology used in other competitions does manage to deal with
this.
>
--- End Quote ---
The only part of Haalands body that looked offside to me on
initial looking at the tv pictures was his arm which is
irrelevant for offside. Both Haaland and Thiaw were engaging in
holding each other it wasnt just Haaland holding and Thiaw
seemed to prevent himself getting to the ball by that action.
If Haaland was in an offside position then disallowing goal is
consistent with a decision at Wolves earlier in the season if i
remember right.
Dont forget SAOT is a cheaper version of the uefa system (cost
cutting?) so i am sure it will have many more floors than its
superior.
For El Referee clear and obvious does not exist when checking
offsides its black or white.
Kav looked well cheesed off waiting to be sent to the screen.
Attwell is fast becoming one of my least favourite vars
The fact they were holding each other is neither here nor there,
the holding isn't the offence, offside is. IF Haaland was
offside that is 100% an offside offence, I'm just not convinced
he was and they've had a technology issue.
Kavanagh can only be sent to the screen once they have confirmed
Haaland was in an offside position, so all he can deal with at
that point is was he interfering with Thiaw, and for me he
clearly was. I'd say there is zero blame on Kavanagh here, and
probably limited blame on Attwell if the technology let him
down. They shouldn't be having to resort to the old method of
drawing lines but the flawed SAOT tech is forcing them to.
I totally understand the point you are making but,
My point was that in my opinion Haaland wasnt preventing Thiaw
from playing the ball but Thiaws own actions of holding Haaland
were, therefore Haaland being in an offside position would be
irrelevant.
I may well be wrong in my opinion but that is subjective too i
guess.

Because they are trying to get a video angle that will let them
draw lines. Looking at tonight's incident I suspect it took 2
minutes before they realised SAOT wasn't going to work, they
were then reliant on the video operator to get them an angle
that allowed lines to even be drawn. Can you not imagine the
pressure that puts you under, it is totally different to
refereeing as with that you see something and make a decision
there and then. And to add extra pressure someone thought it
would be a good idea to let the TV cameras focus on the VAR
officials whilst they try to deal with it.
Perhaps I'm leaning on my experience in IT here. Whenever there
is a big issue there is someone looking over your shoulder, if
it is mildly important it is your boss, a bit more important it
is the department head, a major outage and it is the CTO, and if
all hell has broken out it might be the CEO. It is very
difficult to work when all eyes are on you and you are put under
time pressures, even more so when something is on fire, it just
leads to more mistakes.

The only non contentious element of this imo was the Offside
Both Haaland and Thiaw were behind the GK, in fact, nobody was
closer to the Goal Line than the two of them.
Therefore the Offside was factually correct.
As has been said the interference element is subjective and the
OFR could / should have been recommended much quicker without
the need for all the farting about With lines etc.
