Gillingham v Colchester - Monday - Matthew Russell
   DIR By: Mr Castilli

Just seen this video on report.
Referee Russell hang your head in shame, how there was 0 cards
issued for this mass con !! The report even referenced the fact
there was not a single card issued here…. Absolutely lacked
authority/control… just pure silence from him and his team…

If so many players etc. were involved, perhaps Mr. Russell has
just submitted an incident report to the F.A. for investigation.
Just because no yellow or red cards were shown doesn't
necessarily mean he hasn't taken action.

Whilst “hang your head in shame” is extremely hyperbolic in my
opinion, I do agree a yellow card or two should have been shown.
The number of people involved make the incident look a lot worse
than it was though, nothing more than gentle pushing and
       shoving.
As Seagull sensibly says, i’m sure this footage will all be
passed to the FA to deal out any necessary punishments.

Absolutely right. When there is such a melee a referee might
easily start dishing out cards to the wrong people. You really
do need a slow motion re-run on film to discover who the true
perpetrators were. I am sure retrospective and appropriate
sanctions and punishments will be applied and I expect Mr
Russell said as much to the players to show that they weren't
going to get away with it.

I agree that retrospective action will be taken, but I’d at
least expect a few yellows to be issued to the 2 who started it.
Yes there is footage, but this isn’t available at all levels. If
I was observing a referee and such an incident occurred, along
with no action, I wouldn’t be best pleased.

I suggest those that should be hanging their heads in shame are
the ones acting like children, not the referee and his team…

With the game over, and with so many people involved including
stewards and security staff, I can't really see the point of
inflaming it further by waving cards around. Just raise an
extraordinary incident and let the FA deal with it, which I'm
sure will have happened here. I would hazard a guess that it
started behind their back, as is often the case at the end of
the game, so they'd probably be guessing if giving out cards.

If taking disciplinary action isn’t taken because it might
inflame things further, something has gone terribly wrong.

Disciplinary action certainly should be taken accurately and in
       a timely way.

I’m okay with that approach, although it was the two managers
who started the words that led to the whole incident - so should
have been pretty obvious for the 4th official to point out the
       instigator.
