Donohue, Matthew - Birmingham v Southampton
   DIR By: Failed Ref

During this game the referee collided with a City player and by
consensus prevented the City player challenging for the ball.
Consequently Southampton retained the ball. This took place near
the centre line. Southampton then built up a move on their
right, crossed the ball from which Southampton scored. Imho,
Birmingham should have defended better, the collision was
immaterial as far as the goal was concerned.
City manager went mad feeling that play should have stopped,
even though the ball never touched the referee.
The City manager got a YC and then later a straight red on
behalf of the actions of his staff. Imho cards justified.
My question is what is the Law in respect of accidental
collisions where the referee gets in the way of a player, both
       parties taking legitimate paths?

I believe there's nothing in Law for this specific situation. It
only references the impacts from the ball touching the referee.
Since Donohue didn't touch the ball, there's nothing in Law
requiring him to stop the game.
I think it's just one of those unfortunate things that happens.
Maybe upon reflection both will wish they had a greater sense of
       spacial awareness.

It is just for the ball hitting the referee, there is no
provision for stopping play when the referee collides with a
       player.

Thank you for clarifying it for me. It makes the behaviour of
the Birmingham coaching staff more regrettable. That said, the
Sky commentators also felt play should have been stopped.

Proof, if proof were needed, that the referee was correct to
       play on.
