........which is why I asked the question politely.
I hope I didn't come across as being insulting in any way shape
or form as in any case as a mere fan I am in no position to
       criticise in any refereeing capacity.
It is only the fact that every week he seems to hold court and
sometimes in a manner that if it was someone like myself saying
the same I would have to answer to group admin to explain.
       [/quote]
No you didn’t it’s just something I want to avoid as his name
does seem to bring out strong feelings .

For the thread OP, i would suggest refereeing has gone in a
completely different direction to when he was in charge, for the
better or worse is for others to comment.
He simply is just not on the same chapter never mind the same
line to the pgmol nowadays in his thoughts.

Would it be acceptable to say that during his Active days Mr
Hackett could have justifiably been referred to as a "trundler"
If not then my apologies, please delete

I think that puts is very well indeed. There were a fair few
"trundlers" in that era; another Sheffield based referee Michael
Lowe was another great example of one and he also happened to be
       a fine referee.

Personally, I find KH irrelevant and comments relating to
refereeing standards are not so thinly veiled sour grapes.
Trying to make himself relevant. Rieley simply left and went off
       into the sunset.

Claret man makes a sensible comment re its up to peoples own
personal opinion if they agree with Hackett for better or for
       things getting worse.
I’m in my late 30’s and i openly state that things in refereeing
at all levels is hugely gone downhill.
Like it’s unrecognisable now, the direction world refereeing has
gone, has taken at least a 40/50% dip.
The new action plans they feed out or direction is imo
laughable. Start your promotion and pause if you feel you want
to break. No clear direction on promotion anymore they just take
       whoever they want.
People use to talk about the higher authority from the past
being awful, I totally disagree you had real leaders / real
direction and everyone following the similar type of hymesheet,
even if you didn’t agree with it, people were on board.
IMO refereeing and I read similar on fellow discussion boards
(law 5) being one, but refereeing is at its lowest and pint now
       - the new breed fail to spot obvious things going on in games,
and quite frankly we are not producing the likes of the Webbs /
       clattenburg/ Taylor’s/ Oliver’s anymore

There is some truth in this observation. Refereeing has changed
enormously over the past ten years and the pace of change has
increased very rapidly over the last five. I think there are
three main factors. First, VAR; it makes refereeing an entirely
different activity now to what it was. Secondly, this fanatical
pursuit of consistency whereby referees are 'manufactured' to
officiate in a certain way. Any 'characters' are not driven
forward for promotion and if they bring their characteristics
into their refereeing then it counts against them. Thirdly, the
vast amounts on money generated through broadcasting rights mean
that those who are the overseers of refereeing view football as
an entertainment as much as a sport and so referees are
encouraged to massage the Laws so as to produce maximum
       entertainment factor.
