Stuart Attwell: Chelsea v Aston Villa

Attwell never exudes much authority. No howlers today but the
players refereed the game. A flurry of cautions in the second
half that weren’t incorrect but were caused in my view by poor
player management. And a terrible decision in law in added time
to caution a Villa coach for delaying the restart for the
opposition, when that exact scenario is to result in a red card.

With Sanchez handling outside the area, as this could be a red
card offence, could VAR come in and suggest a review despite him
slipping?
It would be very controversial, but is there a possibility they
could come in?
As for Attwell, I would certainly say that Enzo was very lucky
when he got his yellow that he then tapped him on the back..
We don’t know whether it was malicious or not, however it
doesn’t look good.
I agree regarding the respect, I doubt very much that someone of
the calibre of say Oliver would have had no issues on that front
if he were in charge of this one.

I thought Attwell did ok , was fairly generous in the first half
until the cash booking from then on he seemed to be swayed
easily a couple of cards were delayed and seemed to be
brandished based on players reaction tried to let the game flow
and play advantages . His efforts to try manage the game prior
to the cash booking seemed to backfire overall , Chelsea lost
their discipline in the second half and no blame can put at
Attwell’s door for that

I hate the fact that referees allow players to touch them
nowadays, even if in a friendly manner. Should be at least a
yellow card depending on the severity, many a few years back
would have dismissed the player immediately.
Thought it was a usual Attwell performance, i thought Sanchez
would have received a yellow even though he slipped.

I think my biggest pet peeve at the moment is the
pulling/pushing at corners, in which referees blow the whistle,
vaguely tell them to stop, then likely give defensive free kick.
The James & Roger’s cautions were a prime example of this. Stops
the corner being taken on more than 1 occasion, and eventually
cautions them. Just let the game go and if one of them are still
doing it when the ball is in play, act upon it.

One thing I find frustrating with Stuart Atwell's performances
is the way he flashes the yellow card to a player without
looking at them! We correctly talk about respecting the
referee, but to my mind this is the referee disrespecting the
player.
Contrast this with Simon Hooper's practice of pointing towards
the player he is cautioning. This also avoids ambiguity as to
whom is being cautioned.

I don’t know why it would be a yellow card. He slipped and it

I would say Stuart Attwell is a middle ranking SG1 official. To
me, he never seems to carry much of an air of authority about
him but that may just be how he looks and none of us can help
how we look. He is of slight build but then so was my refereeing
hero Joe Worrall and one was never in any doubt about his
authority on the pitch.

Agreed, plus the fact that it didn’t stop a promising attack,
was not reckless, nor did it meet any of the other caution
criteria
