Quarter Finals
The refereeing teams appointed to all 4 games have been changed
following a complaint from the Moroccan and Nigerian FA.
According to reports, Omar Artan (Somalia) has been removed from
the competition for wearing non-Puma boots during a group stage
match.
Artan was initially scheduled as referee for Algeria-Nigeria,
while Amin Omar (Egypt) was removed from Cameroon-Morocco as the
host nation do not want an Egyptian in charge of their matches.
9 January
Mali v Senegal 4pm
Referee: Abongile Tom (South Africa)
VAR: Brighton Chimene (Zimbabwe)
Cameroon v Morocco 7pm
Referee: Dahane Beida (Mauritania)
VAR: Daniel Laryea (Ghana)
10 January
Algeria v Nigeria 4pm
Referee: Issa Sy (Senegal)
VAR: Pierre Atcho (Gabon)
Egypt v Ivory Coast 7pm
Referee: Mustapha Ghorbal (Algeria)
VAR: Lahlou Benbraham (Algeria)

Is wearing Puma boots seriously that necessary? That seems harsh
to have a referee removed for that reason. I mean if it was a
strict guideline the officials had to follow then there’s some
basis for it but then you’re potentially removing a top referee
from the latter stages of a tournament. Feels harsh to me. Do we
have similar rules in the premier league?
I don’t like the second part. Is there something broader than
football to suggest why Morocco don’t want an Egyptian in charge
of their matches? Or is it a view that Egypt are a big threat in
the competition? Ridiculous whatever the answer is.

Don’t think it’s similar in the prem as for example Peter Bankes
wears Nike boots with the puma kit

Semi Finals - both live on E4
14 January
Senegal v Egypt 5pm
Referee: Pierre Atcho (Gabon)
VAR: Peter Waweru (Kenya)
Nigeria v Morocco 8pm
Referee: Daniel Laryea (Ghana)
VAR: Abongile Tom (South Africa)
Two surprising appointments. Both referees have spent the
majority of the tournament in VAR - Laryea only refereed one
group stage match - while Waweru has not acted as main VAR all
tournament!

Would appear some of the "top" African referees have either
upset their bosses or are being 'dumped' by teams.
Do they operate similar to FIFA and offer 3 names to each side
who can strike one?

3rd Place Play-off
17 January
Egypt v Nigeria 4pm
Referee: Jalal Jayed (Morocco)
VAR: Lahlou Benbraham (Algeria)
This suggests Jayed would likely have got the final had Morocco
not made it, while the VAR appointment of Benbraham pretty much
rules out Mustapha Ghorbal for the final.
The final looks to be between Ndala of DR Congo and Ismail of
Sudan - in my view Ndala is the better referee of the two. Issa
Sy and Abongile Tom have been the best two referees of this
AFCON, but Sy is out due to Senegal’s progression and Tom is not
shortlisted for the World Cup, significantly reducing his
chances.
