Only looking at MoTD highlights, a few issues, I think.
Good to see clear dissent being cautioned - need refs to be
consistent with players running at them hysterically, even if
have to do several in a game.
Looks like a clear penalty. Can only be old school shoulder to
shoulder if ball is in playing distance and actually trying to
challenge for it, not just to barge the player over carelessly
with no intention.
The tackle is a RC and VAR should help him out, as possibly
trickier to spot live.
The final decision which was a clear foul. Madley was flat
footed and didn’t seem able to sprint to keep up? Then the old
trick of publicly looking over at AR and the big thumbs to blame
him if it’s wrong … My biggest worry is the commentator hearing
the VAR explanations which are increasingly not based on law
‘only a small pull and wasn’t going to get the ball’. Both
irrelevant - getting the ball would only affect whether it would
be DOGSO (does he mean he can’t get involved as wouldn’t be a
red card? If so, that’s what he should say, rather than imply
it’s not actually an offence).

I'm going to be shot down on this, but I didn't think the Gordon
incident was a penalty. As has been said elsewhre, 'the eyes
have it' and in this case, Gordon was looking at the defender,
and then initiated contact, enabling him to go to ground. I'll
get my tin hat.

I always watch football on TV with the sound muted and listen to
some of my vinyl collection so that I get some enjoyment one way
or another.
I am in full agreement with you about Gordon, he was marginally
further from the ball than Chalobah and the ball was going dead
because neither player was going to catch it. Gordon saw the
opportunity to go down and made sure he did because his left leg
was extened sideways and away from his body thus making contact
with Chalobah. I was quite surprised that they were reviewing
it.
Put it this way ---if that had been at the other end and a
penalty awarded there would have been all hell let loose on
Tyneside.
Sadly, once again yesterday, there were more and more instances
of VAR involvement, or non-involvement, which will be talked
about for weeks and then reviewed by the media for several more
weeks.
The game was so much more enjoyable to watch when there were
three officials who did their best but still made mistakes which
were talked about by fans for a day or two and then mainly
forgotten about until the next game threw something up.

Madley loudly booed off after full time at Newcastle, Brooks
loudly booed off after both halves at Tottenham. A really poor
day for the SG, just not good enough on the whole. That applies
to on field and VAR. Shames me to say it, and certainly some
players don’t help it (Gordon, Caicedo, Enzo, Joelinton,
Guimaraes, Schar, Romero, Bentancur, McCallister, Bradley) just
to name a few.

Madley was decent first half, as posters have said clamped down
well on dissent, and set decent threshold for contact. Second
half was one of the worst displays I can remember in the last
few years. A total free-for-all, totally lost control and was
constantly swayed by Maresca and Chelsea antics. 3 KMI's wrong,
including stone-wall penalty on Gordon and clear red card for
James in last minute where he makes no clear, sincere movement
to make an angle.
Looked out of depth second half which is a shame for a referee
who did the FA Cup final 2 seasons' ago.

Maybe - I’d have to look again. To me, the defender had no
intention of a genuine dual for the ball and just charged
carelessly into Gordon. To be fair, even though football expects
it to be allowed, I have always hated players shielding the ball
out for a GK, whilst being miles away from it, so I may be
biased. To me it’s negative play and should be a foul iftgeball
isn’t there in playing distance.

The worst part for me in the penalty incident was how quickly
Peter Bankes completed the check on VAR - it took probably no
more than 10 seconds.

Fans upset with the result loudly booing the referee is not
necessarily an objective measure of their performance.

Nor is it a new thing, it has happened at probably at least one
Premier League venue each match day since it was formed. And
happened well before the EPL was even thought about.
