My club were involved in a not entirely dissimilar incident
against Celtic earlier this year, one of our players didn't
realise the ball had been kicked out and we duly scored. These
incidents are always unsavoury when they happened and hopefully
this will be the catalyst for referees taking control and being
allowed to take control by the players by not intervening. The
assistant made a mess of the red card call but I thought Attwell
dealt with it the only way he could, but controversy sure
follows him around!

3 Charges resulting from this game
Bamford - Successful deception of a match official
Leeds - Failing to control players
Villa - Failing to control players

Can't argue with any of those.

I'm not 100% convinced that controversy follows him around as
such, for me there is also an element of people looking his way
for controversy or the opportunity to criticise because of his
past record, which, let's be fair was not entirely of his own
making. For me he often gets criticised for things that when a
similar situation occurs with a more popular referee it gets
ignored, brushed over, excused etc.

Some referees have a natural authority about their person which
imposes itself in difficult situations. Attwell, in my view,
doesn't. He is indeed a solid referee who, in the main, does a
decent job. His misfortune was to be have been lauded, while
very young and by some very influential people in the game, into
a star-quality potential which his ability has never merited. He
is not culpable for this but I fear his reputation still suffers
because of the perceived ( and I believe, actual ) favouritism
he was shown. After his demotion I think he deserves great
credit for working his way back to being where he should be, a
middle order SG1 referee.
Michael Oliver was correctly seen as having potential to be
world class and was given proper time to develop. He has been
the more fortunate therefore and occupies a place on the UEFA
Elite List which I do not think Attwell ever could or indeed
should achieve.

Michael Oliver benefitted from the Ivory Towers learning their
mistakes with how they wrongly pushed Stuart Attwell too far too
soon. As such he has developed into the excellent referee that
he is today and I believe we've not seen his best yet because he
is still developing. When Stuart Attwell was pushed too far too
soon he had shown wonderful ability and talent as a youngster,
in that respect it was understandable to a degree that he was
being hailed as the next best thing because of the promise he
was showing. The powers that be completely destroyed that in
him, imo. I have wondered before now what sort of a referee he
would have developed into had he been allowed to develop with
the same support and time that Michael Oliver has had. Stuart
didn't get the right support, he got put on a pedestal and left
there to flounder and we all know how very wrong it went for him
because of that. Amazing mental strength on his part to come
back from that and to develop into the more often than not
decent young ref he is today. Sadly he will never reach the full
potential that he showed so much promise for early on, I think
the mental scars probably run too deep. There is always going
to be that fear at the back of his mind somewhere that it will
all go spectacularly wrong again it's human nature. Maybe he is
trying so hard to stay in the background and not be noticed,
because he gets noticed for any errors big or small or even just
perceived errors more than his colleagues, that he ends up
projecting himself as being very timid?

And I hope Bamford gets the biggest punishment for nothing short
of blatant cheating. The more I have seen it the more
embarrassing it becomes. Disgraceful behaviour which the
authorities have the chance to make an example of but I won’t
hold my breath as it probably comes with a 2 games ban, a slap
on the wrist and Bamford being available for the play offs.

It can only be a 2 game ban as that is the standard punishment
for "successfully deceiving a match official".

bmb, I think your analysis of the career of Stuart Attwell is
just about spot on. Certainly the movers and shakers must have
seen great potential in him but their subsequent treatment of a
young referee resulted in it not being realised. One could
speculate whether, if he had been coached differently, Attwell
would have achieved what Michael Oliver has done ( and I agree
will go on to do yet ). My jury is out on that one. I saw
Attwell once in his first season on the League. He just seemed
like many of the other young, promising officials. Couldn't see
anything more than that but there again, one match is hardly
enough to form any proper judgement. I saw Oliver live in his
second season and, my word, he looked the real deal then and I
remember remarking to a friend who was with me at the game, that
we were watching a future great referee who would be outstanding
in his generation.

And on Bamford. He is a player I have always liked. He seemed to
be a well rounded individual. He has let himself down very badly
in this incident. A fulsome apology should be forthcoming from
him and a public avowal not to repeat the offence. And a two
match ban of course.
