Altrincham FC v Rochdale - Peter Wright
DIR By: PhiltheRef

First time I've seen this guy for a good while.
I recall, I think, that he was considered promising before
(correct me if I'm wrong) dropping off the radar as it were due
to injury?
We accept that we aren't necessarily going to get the greatest
Officials every week, given the level we operate at BUT this
evening was one of the most concerning performances I've seen in
a while. Supporters around me asserted that they were cheating.
They weren't, IMO they were just inept.
Firstly don't think that I'm suggesting that we deserved
anything out of tonight other than a defeat so this isn't any
sort of "what if" post.
That being said, and we have seen some substandard performances
over the years, tonight's Officiating Team was as poor as I can
recall for many a moon.
Foul detection was at best haphazard. How there was only one
Yellow Card is a mystery.
We could (should, but I'm being generous) have had a Penalty in
each half.
From a laws of the game perspective, the second Rochdale goal
was troubling. The guy putting the cross in appeared to receive
the ball from a Team Mate whilst standing on the dead ball line.
Therefore he SHOULD have been adjudged offside.
Corners were awarded to both sides, seemingly based on who
shouted loudest. Play was stopped for sometimes no apparent
reason.
Free Kicks had to be taken from a precise blade of grass, but
we're the taken 5 metres away.
As I say, we were well beaten so please don't think I'm trying
to suggest that we ought to have got anything out of the game

I’m sorry, but to claim the performance was concerning and
possibly inept just isn’t true.
I think you might need to watch back the second goal. There are
a significant number of defenders in and around the penalty and
goal areas and it's not clear cut at all as to how they align
with TAR. There was limited concern from them as well.
The penalty shout in the first half was rather ambitious. I
think the one in the second half was probably a foul and we were
fortunate there, although there’s an argument we should have had
a penalty for handball near to the end, albeit when the score
was 3-0.
Corners were correctly awarded and it was generally a low key,
non-invasive performance from Peter Wright, who was never one of
my favourite officials in the EFL.
Due to being overseas for Christmas, I had to watch the game on
DAZN, so arguably had a much better view of the aforementioned
incidents than people at the game. The commentator hardly
mentioned the referee.
You’re right, though, the referee and his assistants had no
effect on the outcome. Five wins out of five over Altrincham in
2025, which is a new achievement for Dale.

Whilst obviously respecting the views of a fellow contributor, I
must disagree with a couple of your points.
Re your 2nd goal, I was on my way back from the Gents and your
player was literally standing on the dead ball line. He was in
advance even of the AR and his cross went back away from the
line. I know that as I was dead in line
The first penalty claim, I will give you as subjective.
The second was an extremely obvious shirt pull described by Mr
Wright as yes a shirt pull but not hard enough to warrant a
penalty
I hope you have an enjoyable break and wish you Seasons
Greetings

Lovely to see two people disagreeing about the performance of
officials rather than discussing what VAR should or should not
do.
Proper football rules and even prompts disagreement about the
game itself ---how refreshing -----Happy Christmas to you both
and remember -----
It's only a game.

And the same to yourself, sir.
I’ve just seen the second goal on X from our camera on the goal
line. An Altrincham defender close to the assistant appears to
be the one playing TAR onside, although it’s not 100% clear
without a freeze frame.
Edit: just watched it again on a bigger screen. I was right!

Well said. With respect to our Premier League fans on here
(which i’m sure will be the majority by a distance), I do find
the EFL/non league fan discussion is often more interesting to
read, which I think is helped by having no VAR and unless it’s a
Sky game, we usually only get 1 camera angle to view. It almost
gives a more authentic evaluation of a referee’s decision when
you get one view of it like the official did, rather than 10
different angles played at different speeds.
