Why does it need to be a YC? Either the referee will give a YC
or he won't. What's the difference between that and a player
incorrectly shouting for a foul, a throw in or corner? Or a
player questioning a referee's decision or a player holding up
their fingers to indicate how many times they have been fouled?

All of the examples you quote above constitute dissent (by word
or action) from a referees decision and could attract a caution.
That they do not is down to each individual referee's tolerance
level and the instructions given to them (re: "managing the
game") from their employers.

If Parker from Preston was still around I’d take a decent bet
that the players would dare not do that to him!

That is an astonishing coincidence!
Just five minutes ago, I was having my annual catch up with an
old friend who I first met at the FA Referees' Instructors
course in Lincoln in the late 1980s and have kept in touch with
ever since.
That was - of course - the same E James Parker from Preston.
He is still refereeing age group games for pro clubs in the
north west and you are 100% correct.

How marvellous to learn that he is still active and serving the
game of football. He certainly didn't tolerate dissent and
thereby did a great service to grassroot referees by setting a
fine example of what was and wasn't acceptable in conduct shown
towards match officials. Some of those who promote and dictate
modern "managing dissent" techniques could and should receive a
bit of Jim Parker's modus operandi.

Because PGMOL sent referees to talk to all clubs and players and
that was one of the messages given out, waving an imaginary card
will be a mandatory caution.
