Sutton v Shrewsbury - Jacob Miles (FA Cup)

Jacob Miles not a referee I’ve seen much of if I’m being honest,
but an internet trawl reveals he is originally from Warwickshire
but now resides in Sussex.
He is a Lawn Tennis Association chair umpire and has officiated
at Wimbledon before so he has good officiating credentials. So
much so in fact he did his first EFL Championship match just
recently.
And in fairness he has been impressive so far in a decent cup
tie. A caution after 60 seconds set the tone (correctly awarded)
followed by three more before the first half ended. Jacob Miles
has good fitness, a quiet and confident air of authority about
him and his positioning has been good, meaning his decisions
have credibility.
Also he has played some good advantages, letting the game flow
and even bringing the play back on one occasion when the
advantage didn’t accrue immediately.
As I said, not a referee I’ve seen before but I like what I’ve
seen thus far. Hope he can carry on the good work for the rest
of the game.

I knew of Jacob as a chair umpire from Wimbledon before I knew
he was also a football referee - when I saw his name on the
appointments, I thought his name was familiar, but assumed it
would be someone else - don't know why! It wasn't until a few
appointments in that it clicked that it was the same Jacob
Miles!
He seems to be doing well for himself, he has his 3rd
Championship appointment this coming week, and have heard good
things about him elsewhere. The tennis season (in this country)
doesn't overlap with the football season too much, so I guess he
can be officiating all year round, just across two different
sports.

Think you’ve got his location history back to front.
Great decision for free kick just outside at the start of second
half.

His FA badge looks to me like a Sussex one but I stand corrected
if I’m wrong.
He has been tested in the second half with a flurry of cards but
you can’t find fault with them - second yellow for the
Shrewsbury player absolutely spot on.
Then the Sutton player, already on a caution, delays a free kick
from being quickly taken and is also rightly sent off.
Some penalty incidents correctly called. Miles has had a good
match and has kept good, firm control. The laws have been
applied fairly, consistently and without fear or favour. That
consistent application is lacking in some referees we see.
Cracking cup tie too.

I have seen Jacob Miles referee a few times and have always been
impressed. I’m not surprised he has had Championship
appointments this season.
He is a no nonsense referee.

Agree he is no nonsense and doesn’t take any rubbish from the
players. Added one more red card in the second half of extra
time for a deliberate elbow to the face.
Three red cards and nine yellow cards, but they were all
justified and Jacob Miles showed good consistency, good control
and didn’t allow the players to influence him.
We will be hearing a lot more of him that’s for sure.

The number of cards is not an indicator of his performance, but
rather of what was at stake for both teams. I do feel that some
of the enforced positioning left him guessing for throw ins and
he generally chose, wisely, to give them to the defending team.
I still prefer referees to run diagonals to be nearer incidents.
My only real criticism would be the incident where the Sutton
striker injured the Shrewsbury goalkeeper by sliding in when he
was on the floor. There was nothing deliberate about it but he
arrived after the keeper had palmed the ball away and could have
done serious damage. I was amazed when play restarted with a
corner rather than a fee kick. In tight matches it’s things like
that that can make a difference, particularly with the fair
cautions for other late tackles.
