Sam Barrott - Newcastle v Man City

Have to say I think he’s been very good.
But was Bruno G not offside from the header from Woltemade in
the lead up to Newcastle’s second? He looked offside to the
naked eye. Was really surprised when the goal was awarded. No
pictures of it on sky yet but I trust the SAOT was correct.

He definitely looks it from the pictures I’ve seen but I’ve been
wrong before on this

One of those awkward ones where VAR has to work out which body
part on the arm/shoulder to draw the line.

Let a lot go (could have been card happy) but it seems to have
worked for him, seems like he had the respect of the players and
they didn't take the pee.
1st yellow in stoppage time for Oscar Bobb, followed by a
Joelinton tactical short pull to SPA (good tactical foul from
NUFC pov though)

I’ve seen many-a-referee get flustered by the St James’ Park
atmosphere and lose control of the game, especially when the big
6 come to town. But that was a very calm and collected
performance by Barrott, who is getting back to top form after a
sticky start.
There are a few things I could be a bit picky on. I thought
Joelinton could’ve received a YC earlier, especially with a
belated shove on Silva once the ball was gone. There were a
couple of wrestling incidents on the strikers, Schar on Haaland
could’ve been a booking imo and maybe Gvardiol and Woltemade too
but not as obvious as the other.
I’m fine with no penalty for Man City on the Foden incident. I
can see why people would be annoyed but a VAR intervention, not
for me.
A correction to magpie1982, 1st yellow was actually for
Donnarumma for dissent after Newcastle’s second. Good to see
some punishment for dissent.
Also, I thought he looked like the man in charge tonight. He
showed good authority with the players, being stern when he
needed to be but also talking with them between incidents as
well.
In the cauldron of St James’s Park, I thought it was a really
good performance.

I agree with what has been said - I would add over the last few
weeks Barrott seems to be back to his best hope he keeps it up
and continues getting some of the big games

A very fair post I think.
Had the potential to boil over, but I think Barrott can be
pleased with his performance tonight.
I agree - it did seem to be a more stern Barrott when talking to
players than I remember in previous games, but I think that
aided his performance tonight.
If both teams had scoring boots/heads on it could have been 6-6.

In the fairly recent past Sam Barrott has come in for some very
severe criticism ( and some of it quite personal I felt ) on
this site. I take it that silence from those quarters means that
he is doing really well. I am in no doubt that he will rank as
one of the very senior referees in SG1 if he isn't actually
there already.

No complaints from me. I thought Barrott did really well and
wasn't swayed at all by the usual volatile SJP atmosphere.
I think on another day, with a different VAR, there could have
been a goal disallowed for offside and a penalty for the Foden
foul, but that's nothing on Barrott or his excellent display.
I also thought the SAO imagery the broadcaster put out caused
more ambiguity than clarity. It was angled and given it was so
close, did nothing to dissipate the subjectivity of the
decision.

For me he let far too much go in the first half particularly
3 or 4 clear wavings of imaginary YCs plus a very convincing
Rugby Tackle. He seemed to get away with it but it could have
gone quite spectacularly wrong for him
