Apologies, i’ve been slacking with my notes recently! Just to
add in some recent performances:
Seb Stockbridge vs Harrogate - very good, one excellent decision
to stop a Harrogate counter attack for an idiotic foul well off
the ball by a visiting player.
Abi Byrne vs MK Dons - pretty poor, unlike her first two games
with us. As the game got more tense, she struggled and her
assistants, especially Daniel D’Urso were even worse. D’Urso’s
second game in Colchester this season, both very below par. I
hope ECity gets better fortune from her display!
Andrew Humphries vs Bromley - very good, not too much of a
challenging game but excellently fell into the background.
Isaac Searle vs Fulham U21’s - also very good, a referee that
really impresses me on the couple of times i’ve seen him, to go
with Sean’s message above.
James Durkin vs Walsall - mostly good, I thought he went to his
yellow card too early in the first half but then should have
used it to help speed Colchester along more in the second half,
but other than that, he was fine.
Simon Mather this weekend, who won my wooden spoon award for
worst performance of the season last year for our win at
Cheltenham! I hope he goes much better this time around,
although I won’t be present to see it.

Really like Melissa but seems to have had a tough run of games
in last few weeks. Highly criticised for handball decision which
denied Arsenal a goal in WSL v Chelsea, compounded later by 2
dodgy offsides from her lineos; then gave a 2nd yellow for a
player returning to the field after injury in Solihull v Truro
game (technically right of course), with the player claiming he
had been given the nod to come back on; and Brackley manager
criticised her after defeat last night v Morecambe over a
disallowed goal and then failing to give a free kick to his team
which led to a Morecambe goal.
Hope it runs kindly for her this week as she is a very talented
ref who I think could go far (and with the best legs in football
too!)

I used to think she was probably as good as any of the female
refs, but the last game I saw her was particularly disappointing
with two red cards, in seperate incidents, both overturned on
appeal.

Glad it's the legs. Your previous post, mentioning the best
kegs, made me think that there have been a few male
barrel-chested officials, but Ms Burgin doesn't fit that
description!

Have to say it was an average performance today. Nothing majorly
wrong but a times a bit inconsistent for both teams. Thought all
the yellow cards were spot on. The one bit that stood out was,
Abi doesn’t seem like she is going to give a foul and then a few
seconds later she blows up. Not sure if this is to see about
playing an advantage. But on the whole it was a very poor game
of football. Can easily see why both teams are in the relegation
zone.

Very impressive performance from Melissa at the GIS correctly
given Away side a penalty which was correct decision and for the
away a obvious and clear DOGSO offence, away bench went
absolutely mad, for Mr Mulligan to sort out. Few challenges were
and some weren’t and few yellow card for the obvious ones all in
all good day for Melissa

Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Chesterfield FC (First Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Rock, David
Assistant Referee: Forder-Hay, Jack
Assistant Referee: Smith, Daniel
Fourth Official: Henry, Scott
A bit of a mixed bag from David Rock. For the first 35 minutes
or so, he was fine but, after correctly awarding a penalty to
Crewe from which they scored, David seemed to lose the plot, and
the boos directed towards him at half time were from both sides
of the stadium. Fortunately, the second half was better and it
was good to see him cracking down on dissent with yellow cards.
Rather 'old-school' in looks and actions, he nevertheless is as
fit as some of the younger ones I've seen at Gresty Road and he
did try and explain some of his decisions, which we don't always
see from the younger and more robotic referees. When David
awarded the penalty to Crewe, for me it finally buried the
ghosts of Cambridge in 2018 when his decision to penalise Ng for
a 'foul' in the penalty area was certainly one of the most
shocking I've seen at the Alex, and at the same end as well.
Overall, I think David and team can feel satisfied with their
performance this afternoon, and what a game, well done all three
teams.

I wasn’t at the game, but i’ve not seen many, if any, comments
directed at Simon Mather and team at Meadow Lane, from either
team.
One superb bit of teamwork in the highlights from Simon and AR1
Samuel Clayton, with the referee identifying a deflection that
the assistant missed, meaning (after a short delay) the
Colchester goal was ruled out for offside.
Thankfully that didn’t stop us, with my team starting to put the
run together that we’ve been waiting for - 3 points separating
7th-14th, turning into another exciting season!

Red circle on display at Prenton Park, few years since I’ve seen
one of those brandished!
