T ROBINSON - Palace v Brighton

Bit of a mixed bag in the first half… played a couple of really
good advantages but has given some really soft free kicks, and
not given some that clearly were.
A few handbags as well in the first half and the Brighton boss
carded for mouthing off after a head injury stoppage.

Standard VAR intervention to reverse the penalty call.. correct
call to then yellow card Rutter for diving.

Standard intervention yes but an absolutely woeful decision in
the first place. His positioning was very poor.

Terrible call on field down to poor positioning. Excellent
review by Howard. Mixed bag from Robinson, nothing majorly wrong
but hit and miss decisions. Contributing to a really competitive
game though

Paul Howard has been excellent since stepping up to VAR this
season. Himself, Donohue and Bell have all had really positive
starts to their VAR careers!

Not a disastrous performance by Robinson , but his showing
certainly falls in the “wishy washy” category.
His positioning for the penalty decision, was not great, and
needed VAR to come in and bail him out.
A few other odd decisions as well throughout the game….

Just a thought from me, do you think that these VAR’s who’ve
stepped up from SG2 and below more recently (Bell, Donohue,
Howard and Chilowicz) are performing better because they are
using VAR under its newest set of guidelines so they understand
what the powers want. It seems that our established PL VARs are
still making fairly regular ‘controversial’ decisions. Maybe
because over the last 5, 6 years while VAR has been operating,
so many rules have changed and VAR guidelines have changed that
some PL VAR’s sometimes are a bit confused with when they should
or shouldn’t intervene.
That’s not to say none of the above have had no blunders.
Donohue has had a couple, Bell had one with Brentford v Chelsea
offside but when you compare the regularity of their mistakes
compared to some others, it feels like they’re much more
consistent with operating on VAR and don’t attract much
controversy. Howard especially as already mentioned has had an
excellent start to his VAR career.

A quick post in defence of Tim Robinson over the incorrect
penalty award. His body language suggested to me that he got
some input from his AR. It appeared he was unsure and wasn’t
going to award it but glanced over to his Assistant as if
seeking advice and possibly got a word in his ear.

I have to say, Tim Robinson probably is the winner of best
stadium announcer thus far. The two times I’ve heard him speak
he’s been very confident in announcing to the crowd and details
the explanation clearly. Comparing him to a few other officials
who seem to be a bit more timid and nervous, Tim is certainly
very good on that regard.

I wonder if it’s because he is an ex teacher?
