Interesting clip from a match over the weekend. I don't know the
context so I don't think I should comment on the incident but
what I will say is the way that the media are portraying the
incident would make it seem like a Darren Drysdale incident
number 2, but on a lesser scale.

Very interesting clip, thanks for sharing.
I would agree it doesn’t quite reach the ‘Drysdale standard’ of
inappropriateness, but at best it is high risk. The player
probably exaggerates the push and the whole environment is rough
and tumble, but it does look like the referees frustration
perhaps got the better of him a little bit.
Not a massive deal in my opinion, but it might be useful for the
referee to reflect on the fact that had the player gone to
ground, he might have found himself in quite a lot of bother. I
too have put my hands on players to separate them before, but I
think it probably is ill advised and certainly as in this case,
very risky.

He's lucky the player didn't respond physically. What would he
have done if the player pushed him back or worse? He'll need to
reflect on that as well. Surprised to see a referee with his
experience react that way even if frustrated.

When I qualified as a referee, over fifty years ago now ( yikes
! ) it was quite common practice at all levels of football to
see referees get physically involved in separating scrapping
players. The very wise instructor who put us through our initial
qualification always advised against it saying it could lead to
a set of very unfortunate circumstances including injury to the
referee. I always followed his advice and so the only deliberate
physical contact I had with players was shaking the Captain's
hand at the toss up and ( hopefully ) receiving more handshakes
at the end of the match.
At one club where I always enjoyed my visits, it was disciplined
and well run, a new player once unwisely pushed me, fairly
gently I should say, in the shoulder when I had given a decision
against him and subsequently cautioned him for dissent. A
sending off swiftly followed and that was nothing to the
treatment he received from his manager who apologised to me at
full time. As I say, it was a well run club. I believe the
player learned from his mistakes because after his suspension,
in later matches I refereed, he was as good as gold and gave me
no trouble at all.

It isn't ideal, certainly not best practice, but I do think the
player exaggerated the push and almost jumped backwards, he was
just trying to separate the players to avoid a flashpoint. I
can remember Collina doing this much more aggressively in the
past, have it in my head it was Tomas Repka he was pushing.

Indeed you are correct…
Collina was world class and his reputation on the field was
fearsome but fair.

I wouldn't agree that the player has exaggerated it, it just
looks like he (quite understandably) wasn't expecting to be
pushed by the referee of all people!

I'd argue this is significantly worse than the Darren Drysdale
incident - DD made no physical contact with the player, and was
reacting to abusive language used directly towards him. Makkelie
has initiated physical contact with a player over, what appears
on the face of it, a bit of pushing/holding while waiting for a
free kick or corner to be taken. There doesn't appear to be
anything directed towards him to have reacted like that, nor
does there appear to be a need to do what he did for his own
safety, or the safety of the opponent. If this happened at
grassroots level here, a referee would be looking at a
suspension between 6 months and 2 years, with a fine of
£150-£250.

I think Collina’s reputation really proceeded him in many cases
to great benefit for his ability to control a game. I think he
had developed such a character and personality that he could get
away with these things.
I’m tempted to say, I knew Pierluigi Collina. Pierluigi Collina
was a friend of mine. Danny Makkelie, you're no Pierluigi
Collina.
I’ll get my coat.

The Collina clip was freom Euro 2000 so 25 years ago, times have
changed and I would hope that Collina would have not got away
with it now.
