Standard Liege - Royal Antwerp (Belgian League)

Very unusual (and quite sad) situation in Belgium this evening.
Referee Lothar D'Hondt was struck by a plastic cup thrown by a
Liege supporter. He immediately abandoned the game and it looks
as though Antwerp will be given the points despite being 1-0
down with only 3 minutes to play. Would this be the same
procedure in the UK does anyone know?

According to this article, the final minutes will be played out
behind closed doors.
Well done to the referee for taking the correct action. I'd be
very interested if the same thing would happen in the EPL, where
I feel the show must go on at all costs.

That’s the fairest outcome but the referee definitely ended the
game, he didn’t just signal the players off. Does that not
matter?
I’d be surprised if the game was stopped for that over here.
Unfortunately I think it’d take something that actually
seriously hurt an official for them to call off a game. We saw
the Port Vale fan go after Craig Hicks a few years ago and that
carried on

It was apparently the 3rd time he had been hit by something
thrown in the game. As Dublin ref said the game will actually
finish behind closed doors.
I know they had a trial in the Netherlands a few seasons ago
after Davey someone was hit by a lighter and the headlines were
all photos of him with blood running down his face as a result.
Not sure what happened with it but I'm all for referees stopping
the game and taking the players off the pitch if anyone -
player, coach, ref, lino, ball boy even get's hit by something
thrown. In these days of big brother surely that act will be
caught on CCTV, the person identified, thrown out banned and
prosecuted for assault. It's easier to identify an act of
throwing over what is or isn't said when an allegation of
racial/xenophobic/misogynistic abuse is made but I'd still be
happy for a ref to take the players off the pitch when such
allegations are made. The decent fans, which are the vast
majority, would soon get into the habit of self policing
especially if they start to miss watching games/parts of games
because of some idiots behaviour.
Stop the game, take the player off the pitch, empty the stand
from where the incident occurred and then carry on. Extreme
maybe but something needs to be done.
