Ireland v South Africa - never seen 3/4 players off at the same
time for separate incidents. Cannot complain about any of the
decisions given and a penalty try was inevitable.
One question: South Africa were being very deliberate in the
early stages of the game but why was Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu
not given at least a yellow for a no-arms tackle? Would have
changed the momentum of the game and Ireland could have
capitalised on that.

I agree with you. In the context of the huge number of cards
over the weekend I thought this was one missed.
For all his faults MC is never afraid to apply law, regardless
of number of cards. He has taken a bit of grief for his 2 games
(WALJAP & IRESAF) but he only applied the laws as they are being
interpreted. He gave plenty of notice on the cumulative ones (as
did Luke Pearce in France later)
Also pleased to see YCs despite tries being scored

Watching that ferocious Ireland game, two particular things
struck me. Firstly, what is the difference between a shoulder
charge and a shoulder charge where one arm is raised up as if to
grab the opponent? The latter is deemed a tackle, the other
serious foul play. I am referring to the early charge into the
back of the Irish player presumably to push him into touch? The
South African player lifted his arm. It was a bad look but
Carley and his team were generous - fair enough - but when you
compare his strictness later on (required by Irish ill
discipline", the Irish will feel aggrieved.
The second point, it took ages of playing time to get that scrum
sorted out which led to the yellow card. SA deserved reward but
frankly what can you do when the Irish scrum was being
dismantled? Maybe a fascinating struggle, but a lot of playing
time was lost.
The penalty try on half time was interesting. Usually a penalty
try results in a yellow but it didn't this time. I feel correct
call but I think MC was aware that the game was entering the
farcical stage if not careful.
In the second half, MC eased off but also the Irish improved
their discipline. Two scrums were played away thereby saving a
reset and possibly another yellow card but there appeared to be
A desire to not issue more cards. Was MC consistent therefore?
Or was it good management?
I though MC did very well. Stuck to his guns in the first half
but that first big decision (a non yellow), came back to haunt
him. So true in football.
Luke Pearce did well practicing is French and Aussie linguistic
skills. I still get the impression with him he is slow to pick
up offences as if his assistants or TMO are helping him. Good to
see him back after his fitness problems.
