Anthony Taylor Newcastle v Southampton

Now, I find Anthony Taylor pretty useless with a whistle in his
hand on a football pitch.
Whilst Peter Walton has said it was a definite yellow, how this
summarisation has been made by both individuals is mind
boggling.
Background info: Newcastle cleared the ball where Lascelles (I
think) picks it up midway in his own half and charges towards
the Southampton. James Ward-Prowse on the half way line is the
only Southampton player apart from the goalie ahead of Lascelles
and a Newcastle player running down the far wing with Lascelles.
JWP makes no attempt to play the ball and full on body checks
Lascelles on the half way line and receives a yellow card.

It just can't be a red card. He is in his own half so it
definitely fails the distance requirement of DOGSO, and the ball
is heading in the direction of the corner flag so it wasn't
heading directly towards goal. A red card there would just be
plain wrong.
The argument for it seems to be that it was a 2 on 1 without the
foul, but the referee can't take that into account. Who knows
what is going to happen when one player tries to pass to the
other, could make a complete mess of it.

You can get the same result nay which way. If bT asked Walton
the right questions.

SERIOUS FOUL PLAY
A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent
or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as
serious foul play.
VIOLENT CONDUCT
Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use
excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not
challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official,
match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of
whether contact is made.

so what is the requiremnt distance for a Dogso?

I think that yellow was the correct decision, when you consider
distance from goal as well as direction ball was heading and
having possession of it.

so what is the requiremnt distance for a Dogso?

There are four factors that must be considered, as below.
[I]• distance between the offence and the goal
• general direction of the play
• likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
• location and number of defenders[/I]
It fails the first two for me, it would have been one of the
furthest away from goal DOGSOs ever, and the direction of play
wasn't towards goal and rather was heading wide. Had it been
more central, and Almiron was likely to get onto the ball
himself to score rather than having to pass it to Rondon, I
would be more inclined to say red as it would tick the general
direction of play. But I'm not saying red when two of the four
DOGSO factors haven't been met, it just isn't obvious enough.

Only a yellow card. The Newcastle player was a long way from
goal and too many variables. Great decision

It reminded me of Mark Halsey sending off John Terry at the
Etihad (circa 2009), very similar situation in terms of
position, defenders etc, but a bit more central.
Halsey dismissed Terry I'm the day but it was rescinded on
appeal.
Yellow is the right call here all day, for all the reasons
people have pointed out above.
