Grimsby Town FC (First Team) v Colchester United FC (First Team)
       Football League 2
       Referee: Bell, James
       Assistant Referee: Byrne, George
       Assistant Referee: Hodskinson, Paul
       Fourth Official: Bickle, Oliver
A very eventful game for James Bell and team today, a difficult
one to assess. I think my summary would be that he did well but
made things harder for himself at times.
The “mistake” he made was an early booking for McEachran, which
set a precedent he probably didn’t want to follow as it led to a
lot of yellow cards, especially in the first half. I thought his
foul awarding was really good but as I say, his cautioning was
perhaps too low of a tolerance bar. It led to a bit of a messy
affair in periods with both teams trying to use this to their
advantage by trying to buy cheap free kicks. Colchester were
guilty of this in the first half and a well awarded yellow to
       Payne for a dive.
I thought he did better second half, where the tackles continued
to fly in, letting most of these go correctly. There’s been some
claims of a high boot for Colchester 2nd goal, but I think no
foul is correct given the defender lowered his head. James sped
the away team up at times and did add the time on, but could
have been stricter with this. There were 2 or 3 decent shouts
for a penalty for Colchester, but replays are inconclusive for
all 3 really (the only definite mistake around one of these was
Paul Hodskinson awarding a goal kick rather than a corner for a
shot deflected behind off a Grimsby arm).
There was also a rather bizarre incident where the ball got
stuck underneath the away dugout, our coaching team definitely
could have made a better effort to retrieve the ball, but
booking our 17 year old who wasn’t even in the matchday squad
       was a strange choice!
All in all, a very action packed game which James handled the
majority well, but probably wants a few decisions back too. A
great week for the U’s, 3 well deserved wins and our season is
       truly up and running!

       Football League 2
       Referee: Bannister, Aaron
       Assistant Referee: Guest, Danny
       Assistant Referee: Hall, Bradley
       Fourth Official: Viera, Jacob
I was frankly disappointed with the performance of Aaron
Bannister today. Far too much whistling for my liking,
particularly in the first half and, at times, it seemed he had
never heard of the advantage rule. Bromley in particular
obviously 'sussed' him out and over they went at every
opportunity followed by the inevitable whistle. The result was a
shambles of a game, not helped by Bromley's repeated and
unpunished time wasting + two lengthy stoppages for injuries.
The major talking point came in the 2nd half when Crewe were
denied what seemed to be a fairly clear-cut penalty for
handball. Let me just say that it was a rather more obvious
penalty than the one given two weeks ago by Paul Tierney. One
positive, nine minutes were added on at the end, but Crewe would
probably not have scored if it had been 9 x 9, and Bromley
deserved their 1-0 win. One fan remarked loudly 'get back to
non-League'. I assume he was referring to Bromley but I think
Aaron is going to have to perform better than this afternoon if
he is to see many more games at EFL level.

I absolutely agree with this report. Apparently you’re allowed
to punch the ball away in the box now….
Also - when a player is yellow carded isn’t the injured player
       allowed to stay on?
Aaron never got to grips with any of the time wasting. In
particular the number 11 who was walking to every throw and
corner that he was taking. He booked a Bromley player for
kicking the ball away around the 15th min and I thought he was
going to have a good game from then on… obviously not. Every
time Bromley players threw themselves on the floor he gave it.
Back to the reality of these refs now at Mornflake stadium after
having SG1 royalty in our last game!

RE player receiving treatments from a carded foul - that rule is
very rarely followed in my experience - it either needs a
       reminder or binning.
A shame you didn’t see the same displays that i’ve seen of
Aaron. Bromley definitely a tricky customer.

As Acme said, Bromley played to his weaknesses. You could
describe their win as a “smash and grab” win. After reading your
reports about Aaron, I had somewhat high expectations for him
but I’m unsure to how you don’t pick up on obvious time wasting
       throughout the whole game….

I would agree with the comments made about Aron Bannister
performance, he did not have a good game, Bromley certainly
knew how to get cheap free-kicks and were wasting time from
early in the game, how many times he told the Bromley goalkeeper
to hurry up a the taking of a goal kick. It was hoped that
there was a Referee Observer at the game because on this
performance he is not up to the expected standard.
The overall standard of refereeing has been poor this season ,
although they are all fit and move around well, they have
difficulty in recognising offences which should be penalised.

The player can only stay on after a caution / red card if
treatment is completed "quickly". There will always be
inconsistencies around this as it is down to the referee to
determine what constitutes "quickly". Blame the law, not those
       implementing it.

Ah that makes sense and so in this case it was correct for our
player to stay off for 30 seconds because he was down for at
       least a minute receiving treatment.

Agree on that, not sure treatment is ever completed quicker than
a minute. If a player has been booked for fouling and injuring a
player, I’m not sure the length of the treatment is relevant,
given the game wouldn’t be restarted until he’s up anyway.

By: rustyref Date: October 12, 2025, 12:29 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
This is how the law is written, there's nothing about whether
the restart is delayed or not, it is just about whether
treatment is completed quickly. If the referee deems it wasn't
quickly then the PGMOL requirement for a player who has received
treatment to stay off the pitch for 30 seconds would apply.
Exceptions to the requirement to leave the field of play are
       only when:
       • a goalkeeper is injured
       • a goalkeeper and an outfield player have collided and need
       attention
       • players from the same team have collided and need attention
       • a severe injury has occurred
       • a player is injured as the result of a physical offence for
which the opponent is cautioned or sent off (e.g. reckless or
serious foul challenge), if the assessment/treatment is
       completed quickly
       • a penalty kick has been awarded and the injured player will
       be the kicker
