AS Monaco vs Manchester City - Jesús Gil Manzano [ESP]

Never thought I’d see the day when a referee performed worse
than Stuart Attwell but here we are.
Lost total control at the end with the VAR check for the Monaco
penalty. Let Donnarumma leave the FoP when on a YC, seemingly
without approval, to view penalty kick data on an iPad with the
City coaching staff.
Showed two RC’s to coaching staff of, I think Monaco, and then
cautioned Bernardo Silva for what I assume was dissent.
VAR clearly showed Nico Gonzalez won the ball with very minimal,
if any contact. A strange end to a strange performance all
round. Foul detection for both sides seemed skewed and was so
hard to gauge where his line in the sand was for foul detection
across the board.

Very poor from Gil Manzano this evening .. he was all over the
shop.
Donnarumma shouldn’t have been on the field when the penalty was
taken, and the unsavoury scenes at the end were a testament to
the poor officiating.
The fourth official should have citied more players and staff
involved in that scuffle near the end.

I imagine Sanchez Martinez is the more likely Spaniard to go to
the WC. Manzano was chosen to go to euro 24 ahead of him but
only had 1 group game. Could even be 0 Spanish refs at the WC as
Sanchez Martinez can sometimes look poor also.

People who moan about our referees should watch La Liga!

Seems to have taken over the Lahoz mantle, indeed Lahoz himself
seems to be a bit jealous.

Spanish officials are card sharks… there’s no debate there.
I was actually surprised it took so long for the first card, and
that was for time wasting in the first half with the scores
level!

Apologies if I’m being stupid here, but why did you need to
throw shade on Stuart Attwell? Can’t we just talk about the
performance of the referee without unnecessarily criticising
another official?

Indeed and no yellow card for a Monaco foul on Foden as he was
running towards the penalty area and which bore quite a
resemblance to the foul that earned Bernardo a yellow card which
was just inside his own half.

I guess in life you have barometers. Mine of a poor refereeing
performance was Attwell. Probably not so anymore. Hope this
clarifies?

If you make contact with someone's head, no matter how minimal,
with your foot the best part of six feet off the ground, I would
suggest that it must be a foul (and in this case a penalty) for
a reckless tackle. If there was no contact, as you suggest may
have been the case (I happen to disagree), it is dangerous play
and an indirect free kick.
