A WOOLMER - Sunderland v Doncaster

Some real rubbish from Woolmer this evening, baffling decisions,
Cattermole carded for a challenge when he won the ball, and an
abject failure to give Doncaster a penalty when Ozturk
manhandled Butler in the box quite blatantly.

He would have to improve to reach rubbish standard.
I have come to the conclusion to wouldnt like him officating at
the best of times (Edited, questioning officials integrity is
not allowed sorry)

Well my brother will get to witness Andy Woolmer at Ewood Park
on Monday as Woolmer is in charge of Blackburn vs Bolton , I’ve
given him a heads up about Woolmer

Despite it being a dead rubber Blackburn v Bolton has usually
attracted SG1 attention.
Must be time for him to start drawing his pension.

Without checking I would have agreed but, in fact, only 3 of the
fixtures have been handled by a SG1 since both clubs were
relegated from the PL in 2012. Tierney had the fixture 3 times
before his promotion

I'm glad someone else started this thread because had I done I'd
have been accused of sour grapes. Firstly, Doncaster Rovers got
what we deserved from this game- nothing. A dreadful first half
performance followed by a marginally better second half one. 2-0
to Sunderland was a fair result and I wouldn't have complained
at three or four.
But Andy Woolmer produced the worst display I have seen from a
referee this season. He denied us a clear penalty when Ozturk
pulled Butler down in the area and he failed to give a free kick
(and arguably a red card for DOGSO) when Ozturk wrestled Marquis
to the floor when the score was 0-0. Sunderland scored their
first soon after the Marquis incident, although I have no
complaints about the goal itself.

The worst aspect of the second incident is that before the free
kick was taken, Woolmer had spotted that the two players were
tangling- Butler was actually standing his ground and was being
manhandled by Ozturk. He spoke to both of them before the kick
was taken and you would expect that he'd be looking closely at
the pair of them. The assistant had a good view too, but I don't
blame him for not coming in- he was probably expecting Woolmer
to take action.
I couldn't understand why such a poor official was put in charge
of 3rd vs. 6th in League One, especially at a time when there
are a fair number of dead rubbers about. The only consolations
are that we probably won't get him again this season and that a
live TV audience saw how wretchedly bad the standard of
refereeing is below the Premier League.
I realise I will get stick for this but it's time referees were
made accountable for their performances. If they consistently
perform badly they should be removed. And I've regularly seen
dross like this from Woolmer going back to the time he was
refereeing in the Conference.

The Ozturk and Butler one, they are both holding so not a
penalty for me.
The Ozturk and Marquis one. It looks like the defender does put
his arm across but in full speed not an easy one.
I think the referee called these right

I thought the Marquis incident was six of one and half a dozen
of the other, but that the Butler incident should have been a
penalty.
There's a delicious irony about Butler complaining about being
held in the penalty area, though.
You're right about Woolmer, although Andy Haines ran him close
with his refusal to punish Akinfenwa for anything yesterday.

Seriously?!
I defend referees where I can but even I could not on this
occasion.
The first one is a blatant realisation the attracker was going
to get past him and uses his arm and lack of balance to bring
him down
The tangle in the penalty area may have gone unpunished save for
the fact the referee had just warned them
Im all for supporting colleagues when its tight or with
mitigating circumstance. This is not one of those

Just from 2 minutes of highlights, I couldn’t believe what I was
watching! Dreadful is being polite.
Anyway, the standard of most officials, especially in the EFL,
is quite simply shocking and it appalls me. Don’t get me started
on the arrogance of the way that James Linington, Darren
Drysdale etc. goes around refereeing...
We all have bad days I get that, but my biggest issue is the
system we have. Why aren’t referees punished if they
consistently perform badly?
We have more qualified referees in this country than ever
before, especially younger as well... But the standard seems to
be getting worse!!
Personally, I think they just promote the wrong ones.
