Didn't Webb review a penalty claim where the ball hit the hand
after hitting the defender's foot, that is deflected? I think
his view is that it shouldn't be a penalty. If it wasn't him, it
was DG on Refwatch.

Not really as that was taken out of law a couple of years ago,
that Football Rules site unfortunately isn't kept up to date and
is pretty useless. This is all that the current laws say about
handball, there's no longer anything about a deflection ...
It is an offence if a player:
•  deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for
example moving the hand/arm towards the ball
•  touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made
their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have
made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their
hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the
player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having
their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of
their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised

Whether it is in law or not, PGMOL appear to give guidance that
handling shouldn't be penalised if the ball deflects off a
player's body onto their arm. It has come up a couple of times
on the mic'd up show.

Regarding the Pope challenge on Gyokeres. Just suppose there was
an Arsenal player ahead of both of them so in an offside
position and directly after the incident the ball goes to that
player. Would he be adjudged offside as it wasn’t a deliberate
play of the ball by Pope but merely a deflection? Pope didn’t
play the ball, it just hit him. I thought the bar was supposed
to be raised regarding clear and obvious too.
Penalty kick for me.
If PGMOL are telling officials that deflections off other parts
of the body can’t result in handball aren’t they guilty of
incorrect application of Law?
Don’t make it easy for us toiling lower down do they?

The general problem with this fixture is that over the years,
poor and weak officiating coupled with VAR controversy (not
saying either right or wrong) has meant that both teams believe
that they can get away with more. This leads to the game
becoming more of an ugly physical battle rather than an
entertaining football match.
It needs an official to properly stamp their mark on the game
and take no nonsense. Brooks is a good example (he’s the only
exception as he refereed this fixture last year with I believe
little controversy). I thought the way Gillett normally
officiates, he could have stamped all of this nonsense out but,
rather annoyingly, he didn’t. And once again, the match turned
into an ugly and unwatchable contest.
This fixture will continue to be problematic until this match is
refereed properly.

It's funny how controversy seems to repeat itself in the same
fixtures and this year this fixture is no different.
For me, as Webb said himself last year on Mic'd Up when
defending a similar incident, getting the merest of touches on
the ball when committing to a challenge doesn't necessarily
negate the foul. Had that not been given, there'd be no debate,
but as it was, I find it hard to accept that that is the bar for
intervention from VAR.
On the other decisions, clearly Joelinton should have been sent
off, but I think game management came into play there to
tactically ignore the clear dissent. I think Gabriel was lucky
not to give away a handball, as a bit like the Arsenal penalty
appeal, it's clutching at straws to make the law defend the
decision. Bruno was also lucky not to give away a penalty for
handball from Martinelli's shot given the distance the ball
travelled.
A very tricky fixture nowadays after Attwell's handling of it in
recent times that ignited it. Not one I'd envy anyone taking on!

Both teams guilty of it. Joelinton does it week in week out
though.
Newcastle and Arsenal 2 of the nasty teams to witness on a
weekly basis, makes for today’s “spectacle”.

No penalty as far as I am concerned.
Gyokeres did not try to go round Pope, he actually poked the
ball towards goal in an attempt to score, Pope saved the ball
and it deflected away towards the corner flag. Gyokeres knew
that he had missed the chance and his momentum took him into
Pope who was actualy stood still at the time the save was made
and he just stood his ground.
Have we got to a stage when a keeper is supposed to let an
attacker score because he may collide with his opponent? Pope
committed no offence, he stood his ground and got a foot on the
ball and saved a goal. Gyokeres messed up and missed the chance.
