I think it’s a penalty given how game are officiated nowadays.
We regularly see tiny bits of contact on the ball ignored. Pope
was also not trying to kick the ball so the contact was
incidental. If Sanchez was a foul / red card then so was this
IMO.
Clear booking for Joelinton as well. He’s a thug who gets away
with murder

I don't think you can compare the 2, one tackle was bordering on
SFP and one wasn't.
I called penalty in real time as would 95% of people so VAR
worked perfectly here, once the keeper plays the ball like that
you can't give a penalty as final decision.
Why cant you give a penalty? Just getting a touch on the ball
doesnt mean it cant be a foul.
Both were keepers challenging for the ball getting a slight nick
and bringing them down
And crucially it wasn't for sfp
I would argue he got enough of the ball to call it a fair
tackle, furthering on Pope actually pulls from the tackle after
playing the ball (retraction of leg), he doesn't actually
continue to follow through and as Ref Madness says, where else
do you want him to go?
All fair points, very subjective rather than clear and obvious
mistakes though

It's great to be able to discuss the subjective elements, I was
referring to how VAR should operate.
Given on the field, should only be overturned if clear and
obvious.
I'll use the phrase, it's obvious it wasn't clear and obvious.

Dreadful attempt by Gabriel to try and win a foul on the goal.
Rightly ignored by VAR

Agree re Joelinton, every game he gets away with this thuggish
nonsense. Do our officials not do any research at all?
Anyway, Sanchez incident is clearly different. He continued
through and was just as much SFP as DOGSO to be honest (lucky
not to get red for the high boot as I said at the time).
But that’s maybe just my opinion, fairly subjective area I feel.

I can settle at agreeing that perhaps with the high VAR
threshold it shouldn't have been overturned however I would
personally say it's not a penalty. And 100% Webb will use it on
his next show with the audio and back the decision. Nice to have
a good and fair debate over it though!
Also absolutely no way Woltemade committed a foul on Gabriel for
the goal by the way, barely a touch never mind a shove.

Don't tell them! Be more interesting if they leave it on!
Not fully convinced personally by the VAR intervention, I felt
the more significant contact was on the attacker rather than on
the ball. The contact on the ball felt more incidental. On field
I would say no penalty, but I don't think it met the high bar
for VAR review we have seen in the EPL this season. I'm not sure
Gillett was totally convinced either.
But contact on the ball came FIRST, then incidental contact as
part of the same motion. What else is Pope supposed to do
there?
Well to address that point and Adam's above, a tackle can still
be careless even if there is contact on the ball. Contact on the
ball isn't a cure all resolution for a careless challenge.
Now I think in fairness there is a difference when the ball is
played first as you point out, but it wasn't as if he played the
ball fully and then caught him in one motion. He grazed the ball
which was really kicked into him after he had made the
challenging motion, and then took the attacker out. It sort of
all happened at once, and I felt the touch on the ball was more
incidental. To me that is reasonably defined as careless.
Saying that, I do favor no penalty, I just don't think it meets
the level for an OFR. Difficult incident.

No foul from Woltemade, Gabriel pathetically going down too easy
- just as Woltemade did last week against Bournemouth and got
nothing, so good to see consistency on this front.

I think the penalty will be a really interesting one where I
think you probably need to hear the dialogue between the
officials.
Whilst many don't think it was clear enough for a VAR
intervention, for me it centres around whether Gillett thought
Pope had touched the ball. If Gillett said to VAR he didn't see
Pope touch the ball and therefore gave the penalty, then for me
there is evidence that Gillett for whatever reason had not seen
the whole event correctly in its entirety and there was material
evidence which had been unseen on the field that would
potentially cause him to change his decision and therefore
correctly sent him to the screen.
If Gillett saw the touch on the field then I find it a much
harder one to understand why VAR would intervene as this would
essentially be "re-refereeing" the incident.
A good one for Webb's next show I think.
