Jarred Gillett - Newcastle vs. Arsenal

Always a controversial fixture, Gillett has his work cut out.
Just a minute in, the typically thuggish Joelinton hacks down
Saka from behind with zero intention to play the ball. Free
kick but no yellow card?! It doesn’t matter how early it is,
that was as blatant a yellow card as you’ll see.

Correct VAR intervention and no penalty… although they need to
switch off the stadium mic to Gillett!

Boy oh boy that’s a mightily tough call to make.
Looked for all the money in the world like a penalty kick and
red card for Pope. But on review, firstly there’ll no doubt he
plays the ball, so it cannot be a red card for deliberate DOGSO.
Whether it’s a penalty … well Pope certainly gets a touch on
the ball so for me it’s correct to overturn. Did he bring
Gyokeres down thereafter? Possibly, but it’s entirely natural
to do that after making a fair challenge, where was Pope
supposed to go?

To me that is similar to the chelsea gk red card that was given
for DOGSO (can argue sfp for that one but that wasnt what was
given) keeper got a slight touch on the ball 2nd but brings down
the striker.
I am very biased admittedly

Don't tell them! Be more interesting if they leave it on!
Not fully convinced personally by the VAR intervention, I felt
the more significant contact was on the attacker rather than on
the ball. The contact on the ball felt more incidental. On field
I would say no penalty, but I don't think it met the high bar
for VAR review we have seen in the EPL this season. I'm not sure
Gillett was totally convinced either.

Couldn't disagree more. Given on the field, should only be
overturned if clear and obvious. The fact he had to look at the
replay 20 times would suggest it could never be described as a
clear and obvious error.

I don't think you can compare the 2, one tackle was bordering on
SFP and one wasn't.
I called penalty in real time as would 95% of people so VAR
worked perfectly here, once the keeper plays the ball like that
you can't give a penalty as final decision.

But contact on the ball came FIRST, then incidental contact as
part of the same motion. What else is Pope supposed to do
there?

Why cant you give a penalty? Just getting a touch on the ball
doesnt mean it cant be a foul.
Both were keepers challenging for the ball getting a slight nick
and bringing them down
And crucially it wasn't for sfp

I would argue he got enough of the ball to call it a fair
tackle, furthering on Pope actually pulls from the tackle after
playing the ball (retraction of leg), he doesn't actually
continue to follow through and as Ref Madness says, where else
do you want him to go?
