Chris Kavanagh: Crystal Palace v Liverpool

Firstly, well done to Crystal Palace because they deserved to
win based on performance today.
However, first Palace goal shouldn't have happened as should've
been a GK rather than corner, however mistakes happen and I
wouldn't call it obvious from the refs angle and I only noticed
when after a few replays.
Decision was right to allow Chiesas goal, good from Donohue to
rule all angles inconclusive and go with referees call.
Finally, I think Webb needs to set the refs down and come up
with a set policy on how added time is policed. Last week at
Anfield the second half was stop start all half yet only 3
minutes were added on, yet today at Selhurst added time was more
oress interrupted barring a sub yet 90 seconds extra appear, we
need a set policy to ensure consistency week on week.
Edit: and one more thing, I know it's a hot topic on here but
the technical area needs to be consistently policed. I agree
Slot should've been booked today for leaving his but 90% of the
time you won't see it happening. It's not fair for one to be
punished and not all. Some 4th officials seem stricter than
others, Sam Alison in particular seems strict as I've seen a
good few managers get pulled up when he's on the line.

I think it's funny that this week Liverpool fans are complaining
about how much stoppage time was played, however they benefited
last week from too little being played. Swings and Roundabouts
comes to mind

There is already a policy, they are told what to add time for.
But the game being "stop start" isn't one of them, otherwise
they'd be adding time for every free kick, corner, throw-in,
etc, and games would be taking well over 2 hours to complete.
Slot wasn't cautioned for leaving his technical area, he was
cautioned for leaving his technical area to protest a decision,
they are two very different things.

Just a general question on the topic of time wasting while it’s
been mentioned on here.
Who is the most responsible for the number of added on minutes
at the end of the half? Is it the on field referee - in terms of
being timekeeper for the match - or does the 4O just tally up
the minutes themselves? Cause I’d really like to know.

Judging by the fact timekeeping is an issue I would say neither
accurately 😉 in jest

Typically, AR2 will feed in to the 4th official the exact times
of all stoppages that are mandatory to include (subs, assessed
injuries, red cards, penalties and goals (30 seconds deducted as
‘standard’)). 4th will inform referee of the total time on the
match record card and agree what is going up on the board.
There remains flexibility for the referee to increase the
additional time for other, non mandatory delays but this rarely
happens.
Net net, there should be a highly specific and accurate amount
of time for the majority of typical delays … but if teams are
good / clever with their gamesmanship then they might still
benefit from this

I know from personal experience that this has been delegated to
the AVAR in some leagues to calculate (usually via stopwatch in
the VAR booth), which is then communicated to the 4th
official/Referee team close to the end of each half.
Quite beneficial when benches/the match get a bit tetchy!

Really can't see how the VAR protocol allows for that.
Certainly not what they do in the EPL, you can see the 4th
official keeping a note of stoppages.
