I’m more worried at the fact they can’t get a spare Turkish ref
to go along with Cakir and act as VAR - so they had to dump the
utterly incompetent Massimiliano Irrati on him instead

What a game! Credit to both sides, and although not as enthused
about Cakir normally as some on here, I felt he did well, as
indeed did Irrati. We don't really know if he was simply
alerting Cakir to a possible handball for Spurs' 3rd goal or was
advising him it was handball. After several replays from
different angles, it wasn't clear to my eyes and in the
circumstances I think Cakir was right to let the goal stand.

Yet the one angle that seemed to show the ball struck the arm
first, wasn't shown on any of the replays that Cakir was shown.
No blame can be attributed to Cakir in this instance, that would
lie with Irrati or the technology providers for not showing that
angle for Cakir to preside over.
I'm confident if he saw that review the goal wouldn't have
stood.
However, we can have nobody to blame but ourselves. The Aguero
missed penalty in the first leg, the plethora of chances
squandered in this game. Sometimes you just have to surmise that
it wasn't to be.

That injury time VAR was one of the most dramatic things I've
seen in football!
I liked this tweet from journalist Matt Dickinson - 'So now we
get to talk about an amazing game instead of hammering
officials, imagining conspiracies and losing our minds over an
easy error to make re offside. Good, right?'

An incredible game from start to finish in which Cakir played
his part. Personally I would like to have seen City go through
which they would have done had it not been for VAR spotting the
offside, but that would have been an injustice to Spurs. Credit
all round to players, officials and supporters for a thrilling
game to watch - probably the most exciting and entertaining
match at this level I have ever seen.

I cannot agree on your first paragraph. A number of angles were
shown for Spurs 3rd goal, only one of which suggested that it
might have been handball. All other angles suggested that it hit
his thigh/hip area. I don't think that VAR should be seen merely
as a tool to confirm a particular viewpoint, rather to get the
decision right, and in my view, it was right that the Spurs 3rd
goal stood. I agree fully with your second paragraph.

I have to disagree a little with the second paragraph. If (and
it's a big if) the officials have made an incorrect call which
has changed the result, they have to take the blame, they have
to be accountable.
I think the issue most fans have with officials is not so much
making mistakes, it's the closing of ranks of the referring
community after errors which are hugely costly, both financially
to clubs and emotionally to supporters.
I agree with the the sentiment that a club that wants to be a
"footballing dynasty" shouldn't be relying on borderline VAR
calls to progress, but that doesn't excuse the officials from
their duty to get things right.
To be clear, I don't personally think the referee made a
mistake, but if he did/the VAR didn't or couldn't show the right
angle to get the decision, we shouldn't excuse it.

Even if it did touch the arm, it would still not be handball
under the laws this year. The hand was not used to propel the
ball into the net - UEFA have defended the referee’s decision
regardless of whether it struck his arm.
