So, when George Hirst was clearly fouled and cautioned for
simulation in a wretched performance from Leigh Doughty
recently, not only does he not get his penalty but the other
team gets one instead? Too much responsibility handed to
referees who have regularly shown themselves unable, or
unwilling, to recognise actual simulation.
All matches should be retrospectively scrutinized and all acts
of simulation at any point in the game should be sanctioned.

I would have to agree with nemesis here. In the EFL, the idea
that a penalty should be awarded against the simulator simply
wouldn’t work because you could only image the outrage when a
clearly fouled played is deemed to have committed simulation by
a referee.
I am happy to have retrospective punishment for simulation but I
don’t think it has to be applied only when penalties are
awarded. When referees don’t give anything and just wave things
away, if it’s a clear act of simulation then use the
retrospective punishment. Maybe not a two match ban because the
official hasn’t been successfully deceived but I’d be happy with
a one match ban under ‘attempting to deceive a match official’.
Simulation is one of those things where if it is not punished,
it won’t ever come out of the game. Even at premier league
level, I’ve seen penalties given, overturned by VAR and then no
card for simulation. Where’s the retrospective punishment there?
If it’s given on field then that player has successfully
deceived a match official. Just because there’s the safety net
of VAR, doesn’t mean players shouldn’t be punished for diving.

it was disappointing to see a blatant and clear act of
simulation go unpunished in the champions league yesterday in
the arsenal v athletic club game.
ref clearly sees it, waves him up, play on...why not stop play
and caution? there's zero advantage besides not being given the
free kick

Also agree, there's too much of a risk that a team are unfairly
punished twice because referees will make mistakes and
incorrectly see it as simulation. And all that would lead to is
referees never penalising simulation as the consequences of
getting it wrong would be too great. I remember a few years ago
when Fernando Forestieri was on the wrong end of a terrible
challenge, the referee saw it as simulation and gave him his
second yellow card. That was bad enough, but to then add a
penalty on top of it would make the injustice much worse.
The answer is to have every potential act of simulation reviewed
by a panel every week and strictly sanction everyone who dives
even if the referee cautions for it on the day. 2 game ban the
first time, 4 game ban the next time, 8 game ban after that, and
so on, that would soon stamp it out. It would have to only be
for where it is very clear simulation, such as the ridiculous
dive by Kerkez at the weekend.

I agree, would be counterproductive as the risk of error would
mean refs give nothing.

I’ve said it before on here. The managers would cut it out in a
weekend if the offending team were deducted one point plus any
gained by the act of simulation

I don’t know if anyone has looked in the L1 & L2 thread recently
but it has been announced today that a Crewe player has been
given a two match ban for simulation after successfully
deceiving a match official.
It’s good to see this retrospective action being used again. Can
the panel please keep this up? Simulation should not be part of
the game.

Agreed, but Gillingham, Crewe - dare they try it in the Premier
League. VAR might result in some cases being overturned, but I
am not convinced that simulation is not sometimes rewarded.

Simulation is often rewarded at PL level with no VAR involvement
because of where it is on the pitch.
Indeed, in the Champions League at Newcastle last night one
Newcastle player went down untouched, however, because of the
referee's angle it looked as though he had been tripped, sadly,
he hadn't. This happened 15 yards into the opposition half and
did not lead to anything from the free kick which was awarded.
