Very poor decision for late Gillingham penalty. Forward fell
into keeper.

James Durkin with some poor penalty decisions in my opinion.
Three incorrect decisions for me.
1) A clear sustained shirt pull from a Bromley defender on
Gillingham No5 Smith. I think that clearly meets the threshold
for a foul and so a penalty should’ve been awarded
2) Wrong decision to award Gillingham a penalty in the 95th
minute. McCleary initiates the contact and actually commits a
foul on keeper Smith by kneeing him on the head.
3) I think Bromley should have had a penalty in about the 100th
minute as Gillingham No3 went into the back/pushed over Bromley
No5 as the corner came in. Looked pretty clear to me watching on
the TV

I know Andy Woodman got some criticism (fairly) on here after
some strange comments about officials earlier in the season but
nice to see him sympathise with James post match - saying that
“Durks” (perhaps some history there) had a bad angle and he’s
been conned by a player looking for a penalty out of nothing.

Colchester United FC (First Team) v Crewe Alexandra FC (First
Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Rollason, Greg
Assistant Referee: Bartlett, Conall
Assistant Referee: Cresswell, Alan
Fourth Official: Farrell, Conor
A good day for Greg and team I thought today in Essex. It wasn't
a feisty game but there were some heavy tackles going in at
times and I think Greg was spot on with all cautions. Golding
was walking a tightrope and put in a strong challenge whilst on
a yellow but I think a “last chance” was a fair approach. He
played some nice advantages, but missed a couple too.
One thing I did notice was Greg seemed quite distant from
players, I don’t really remember him conversing with a player at
any point throughout the game, choosing to let them walk off
when booking players. It wasn’t a game that really needed it
though, so he may have taken a different approach if required.
My only points of criticism would be Crewe’s number 2 was lucky
to avoid a booking for timewasting at throw-ins in the first
half. And Greg badly needs to practice his counting, his
counting down was far too slow, allowing at least 10-12 seconds
on most occasions. I have a feeling that’s going to be a gripe
for me this season!
Fairly minor points though, I’m happy with team ref today. I
must say I think Colchester would have been fully deserving of
all 3 points but our young attackers spurned the chances that
came and we finished level.

Never seen him referee but find it bizarre he was one of the few
newbies to get League One games last season but now suddenly
isn't considered good enough presumably to do NL matches.
Likewise with Scott Simpson who I have always been reasonably
impressed with certainly at L1/2/NL level.

I managed to watch from 20 mins onwards on sky sports plus. I
agree with your comments. Golding’s foul I never thought was
going to be a yellow card. There was hardly any contact at all -
it looked as though the Colchester player made a meal of it. It
really was nail-biting stuff towards the end…. We seemed to be
have been too negative these past couple of games and in both of
them we lost and drew.

penalty shootout with him awarding Bromley a penalty. So a bit
of history there with Bromley and James

He had a blinder that day, the no foul decision for the first
Bromley goal one of the best I’ve ever seen. Shame about his
start to this season which by all accounts hasn’t been great

Seems to be pretty cut-throat in the National Group at the
moment!
I'm sure Mr Mulligan refereed the NLN play-off final a few years
ago before being promoted to Step 1 so was therefore deemed one
of (If not the top) performing Step 2 referees at the time.
Think it was the start of the 2024/2025 season when the NGR
merger was announced as referees like McQuillan and Bancroft got
in essence double jumps from Step 2 to NGR but I think both of
those remain on the list this year.
Not sure how easy it will be for referees like Mulligan, Crusham
etc to bounceback given the removal of observers in favour of
"Scouts" this season.
