After Andy Davies failed miserably in the same fixture last
season, I was pleased to see our promotion hero Martin Coy back
at Valley Parade today.
He allowed a lot of contact, which suited the hosts as there
were less opportunities for Wimbledon to do what they do best,
delay the restart. The visitors did attempt their usual dark
arts on a few occasions but credit to the referee, he saw right
through it. There was only one missed foul in my view, by Matty
Stevens early in the second half which I thought should have
seen him cautioned for a reckless arm.
The 2 first half goals were perhaps controversial, but I thought
Coy and his team were correct to allow them to stand. First,
Stevens was more interested in Joe Wright’s movement rather than
the ball as it was sent forwards to him, but Wright made a hash
of it under minimal pressure and allowed Marcus Browne in to
score.
Wright made up for his error with the equaliser, after the
Wimbledon keeper tried to punch a cross clear but it went in the
wrong direction, leaving us with an open goal. Curtis Tilt
jumped for the ball alongside the keeper, but not into him and
it was a great call to play on. Allowing both goals was
consistent with how he refereed the game. I was very impressed.
Safe journey home wombles, you’ve just been pecked by the
chickens!

Didn’t have any big hopes for Dean Watson after recent games
involving our team !£5 Can’t say I was overly impressed by some
on Mr Watson decisions today not just for the home but for away
side as well, I though he got the call in the last minute wrong
which would of resulted in a free kick to the home side which I
thought at the time wasn’t and not seen any replays yet but it
seem to really the Aldershot manager. Looking forward to seeing
how Aaron Bannister gets on Wednesday as general a good referee

That has nothing to do with Matthew Russell who I thought was
excellent throughout, and a real prospect for the future. Tall,
fair-haired, boy-ish, with the looks of the much respected
Anthony Bates and Ray Toseland of old, he didn't miss a trick
all afternoon, cautions were spot on and he allowed robust but
fair challenges, which was good. Well done Matthew, I hope to
hear good things about you in the future. Pity I couldn't say
the same about the home team who were second best all afternoon.
Mr Pulis has clearly lost none of the managerial skills he had
when he was at the Palace in the big League.

Now having seen the highlights back in the incident of the
disallowed goal, for me that’s not a foul the defender has to be
stronger Aldershot rightly should of had the goal but it was
ruled out

A question from yesterday's game at Crewe. A Swindon sub came on
in the 2nd half and it soon became apparent that he had no name
or number visible on the back of his shirt. I suspect he had his
shirt inside out. Should this have been picked up by the 4O
before he came on or, failing that, by the referee Matthew
Russell, at some time thereafter, and is this a mistake which
would count against the officals for failing to spot?

Fourth Official: Wall, Thomas
Mr Kennard-Kettle did fine for the first ten minutes, keeping
his distance and trying to let a fairly disjointed game flow.
However after that things went downhill. His foul detection was
erratic, what merited a YC was unclear and his rather detached
style meant that Notts County time-wasting too often went
unchallenged. There were two Rovers penalty claims. The first
involved what appeared a goal bound shot being blocked by a
defender's arm away from his body. It looked like a penalty to
me, but even if the referee did not judge that to be handball,
he was well placed to see that the ball had come off the
defender last, yet awarded a goal-kick. The other was a possible
foul by the Magpies keeper Roos and the Rovers keeper McGee at
a late corner. It looked like there was certainly an argument
for a foul on McGee, although unlike the first instant, I have
only seen at once the game. I was surprised only 6 minutes added
at the end of the second half; 2 goals, 4 substitutions 2 physio
treatment sessions, though in the event, 9 minutes of added time
were played.
