Not sure how it can be said it was an awful match, most neutrals
I've spoken to and listened to think it was a cracker of a game.
Hackett is barely qualified to comment on refereeing, he
certainly has zero qualification to comment on the state of the
game in general.

Hackett is a dinosaur who should keep his trap shut about
refereeing matters.
We could easily write a comic strip, in spades, about the
endless drivel and waffle he comes out with

It really doesn't matter how much you like or dislike Keith
Hackett, he is as netitled as any one of us to have an opinion
and to express that opinion to whom he wishes.

May be, but he is paid to write his opinion on refereeing, not
the state of the game in general. Allowing Hackett to write
about football away from refereeing is akin to asking Boris
Johnson to write about telling the truth, neither would have any
qualification.

Strange though that, on whatever aspect of football Hackett
expresses his opinion, he always gets a response, in spite of
many people on here saying that he is not worth a response.
As to your observation, one is an ex-referee who was involved in
the game for a long time and one big thing in his favour was
that he didn't introduce VAR. The other one is a politician
-----truth and politicians are no longer bedmates ---as can be
seen every day.
We suffer both on a daily basis and they both get paid for what
they are doing.
Who are the mugs?

The Hackett reference I brought up was because it made a very
good point. Yet people want to criticise him and drift off the
valid point that he makes. Slating him merely distracts
attention from serious issues within the game. We have tried to
speed up the game with the 8 second rule, now we need to find
other effective ways but that is not going to be easy.

I’m not interested in Keith Hackett’s comments, he comes across
as quite bitter. He had his time and opportunity in refereeing
and it’s moved on.
Regarding time-wasting though generally there is something to be
addressed. As a Liverpool supporter I’m quite used to teams
deliberately breaking up play by delaying restarts, feigning
injury and deliberate fouls (often praised by commentators as
good fouls or one for the team). Poor sides are usually the
worst for it although teams managed by Messrs. Arteta, Simeone
and Mourinho despite ability in their squads have consistently
done it. Now that the eight-second change to Law has come in
I’ve already detected deliberate slowing down at goal kicks and
throw ins and I think referees need to be more assertive in
dealing with it rather than for example giving a goalkeeper
whose antics start in minute one a yellow after eighty-eight.
From my experience of Eddie Howe’s team playing against
Liverpool they employ timewasting tactics frequently and
Monday’s example reminded me of a few seasons ago at Anfield
when Nick Pope feigned injury for two minutes at the end of the
game then Liverpool scored the winner during the time added for
it.

I’m still on the fence a bit with time wasting. Ultimately it’s
about getting a result and there are several ways to skin a cat.
If everything was equal then yes. But it’s not, there’s a
massive disparity between teams’ budgets, ability to attract the
best players. Maybe Newcastle with their ‘not exactly poor’
owners isn’t the best example but if you’re a less wealthy prem
team against multi-billionaire City, Liverpool etc and your best
chance is to slow goal kicks down after you’ve done the hard bit
of getting a goal in front, I’ve not got a massive issue with
it.
To be honest it’s no more boring than City playing a million
passes with the ball in play.
