They are paid around £180,000 and there is not capacity for
referees not to double up these appointments
True, but I suppose they could be paid 20 million, it wouldn’t
change the strain on their ability to perform. Of course, many
of us go to more unpleasant jobs that we don’t really want to
support our families etc. however, this a specialised sporting
profession and if the EPL want top level performances
consistently, they will need to invest in more officials in my
opinion. I think one appointment a weekend or perhaps two 4O
appointments would be reasonable.

I take The Times but I couldn't find this article anywhere.
Please could you say on which day it appeared and if possible,
the page number. Thanks.

take quite a lot of interest in the "continuous TV replays" of
the incident so are the Sky (and other broadcasters) editorial
teams in effect able to influence their decision making?

I found that quite troubling. Along with the references during
the Darren England offside error to the VAR manager ‘Oli’ giving
instructions to the VAR to stop the game - it seems the VAR is
not operating in the isolation it should be in my opinion.
Some elements of the article surprised me, and that was
certainly one, I would be a bit concerned that an official would
care a jot what the broadcasters are saying/doing.
There is a broadcast feed that is available. Broadcasters - by
pure manpower, resource, and investment alone - can manipulate
and jump between angles quicker than VAR can. Imagine the
outcry that an angle (and subsequently a correct decision) was
missed because VAR opted not to use a broadcast feed?
That would be quite correctly highly criticised.
You use the tools available, and the broadcast feed can find the
'right' angle quicker than VAR/AVAR and the VAR technician can.

The late great Keith Miller, who flew Mosquitoes in WW2, was
asked in a tv interview about the pressures of playing in an
Ashes series. His reply was “There’s no pressure in sport,
pressure is having a Messerschmitt up you arse”

And Keith Miller was right, but he played in the 1950s when
professional sport was entirely different to the 2020s.

Ah, the Telegraph rather than the Times perhaps. Would explain
why I didn't see it as I usually read the sports section quite
diligently.
Thanks for reproducing it.

Whilst I agree on the one hand, the fact is it's a different
world between then and now. Unlike his era when there was 1
shaky camera mid way up the pitch about midway up the stand and
a view from quite some distance there are 20/25+ cameras these
days that are HD, so-mo capabilities and can zoom in close
enough to see a microscopic bit of fluff. There was far more
respect & referee errors were shrugged off as part of the game,
as they should be, imo. Whilst it will be a completely different
type of pressure to flying Mosquitoes in WW2 and certainly not a
life and death situation like that was, there is still a lot of
pressure if for no other reason than every PL game is literally
worth millions in this day and age and referees will be
headlining for even the smallest of errors. Stuart Attwell's
ghost goal - Watford v Reading in Sep 2008 still gets mentioned
on a regular basis, 17 years after the fact, Andre Marriner
sending off Kieran Gibbs in 2014 still gets mentioned regularly,
11 years down the line. You don't hear about referee errors from
his era, not because they didn't happen but because they were
forgotten about by the next week. There is an immense public
scrutiny now than in his era wasn't heard of and with SM and
technological advances the videos of errors are there for ever
more and played over and again years after they happened.

Social media is a recent thing of course and we now have a sick
society where referees wake up one morning with police outside
their house. It is a very different world.
I am not aware of any current top officials who have served in
the armed services particularly on the front line but Jack
Smith, a top rugby league referee who did the game at Leeds last
night, I think was a tank commander or something like that and
wounded on active service.
