I remember I saw Aaron back in March and he has a massive game
of two halves, with one excellent and one not so and was keen to
see a second game. Overall, I would say he did well today.
I quite like his style, seems to referee with a smile on his
face but not afraid to show them who’s in charge - an early
example of which was booking Payne for “waving the card” before
correctly booking the Barrow offender too. It wasn’t the most
troubling game for him but dealt with most offences correctly
and swiftly. Aaron played 2 or 3 lovely advantages, although I
think at least one of those advantages should have led to a
booking at the next stoppage. I thought his team got nearly
everything right too, a good day in the office for team ref.
The only blemish on the day was between minutes 75-85 where I
think he let Barrow’s antics get a little bit out of hand, two
or three poor free kick decisions, as well as relaxing his
timewasting control - he had previously clamped down on it
quickly by booking a Barrow player on his second occurance of
taking his time.
All in all, I’m happy with the officials showing and they
certainly had no baring on the result - as our manager correctly
said, we could have played until tomorrow morning and we’d still
have no goals scored

Okay performance from James Durkin today. He didn’t get too much
wrong but seemed to whistle everything in the second half -
those with me thought his fitness was poor so that may have been
deliberate. Fair result though and he correctly waved away our
penalty appeal in the first half.
His two assistants were unfortunately very poor in my view, and
AR1 Sam Wesson didn’t even finish the game, replaced by
Massey-Ellis just before Peterborough’s equaliser. Hopefully not
a long term injury but I was a bit disappointed they didn’t
request a 4th from the crowd, could’ve been my chance!

It was a pretty poor showing from Abi today. The first time I’ve
seen her live and I wasn’t impressed. She seemed more interested
about where throw ins needed to be taken from rather than the
obvious fouls she missed. It felt like a lot went to the home
side but she did give some extremely soft fouls to both sides
which left both sets of fans singing “you’re not fit to
referee.” When one set of fans sing it, it’s clearly because
things haven’t gone their way but when both sets of fans sing it
you know you’ve had a muck up. She seemed to whistle at
everything and refused to play advantages - there were plenty of
times she could’ve kept the game flowing. In fact she ruined a
really really good attacking game by her constant whistling.
However, she didn’t cost Crewe the win as we missed an open net,
had a goal disallowed for offside and hit the woodwork 3 times.
It was one of those days where “nothing went your way”

I wouldn’t accuse anyone of being bitter from a result because I
trust you have a perfectly reasonable view of Abigail Byrne’s
performance however I have watched some highlights of this match
and some of your statements are plainly not true.
Watching extended highlights on a YouTube channel, I saw Abigail
play three excellent advantages, all leading to attacking shots
on goal, one actually being Crewe hitting the crossbar. You
cannot say she refused to play advantages
‘You’re not fit to referee’ is sung virtually week in week out
everywhere. I heard it from both sets of fans today at Preston,
directed at Matthew Donohue. However, I’ve sometimes been at
games when fans have sung it and the referee has done a
perfectly good job or made an excellent decision so that can’t
be used as a measure of how well a referee is performing.
Obviously I haven’t seen the whole 90 minutes so your thoughts
and opinions are much more accurate than mine but from what I’ve
seen it doesn’t look like Abi Byrne was as bad as you’ve made
out, especially as I’ve seen things that contradict what you
say.

I must not remember the advantages she played then which I
apologies for. However, there were plenty of times where she
didn’t play an advantage - an example was when our player slides
in from behind but wins the ball and Gillingham are about to
have space down the right wing for a great attack but she pulled
it back. Abi left both sets of managers bemused at times. I’m
sure Ayrton Hursey had a fun time this afternoon! I must give
credit for her booking our #3 for kicking the ball away however
every referee should be giving a caution out there. Like I said,
there were a lot of soft free kicks given, some that even
weren’t fouls. But it is good to see more women referees in the
men’s game especially after Rebecca Welch retired from on field
duties.
