I am struggling with this interpretation of physicality these
days and I was surprised at the level of contact Hooper let go.
No-one is saying it is wrong and so I will have to get used to
it. I watched Kitchen at Birmingham and he started by penalising
nearly all physical contact, hence my unease in this game (and
indeed others). But watching EFL highlights at the weekend it
appears that in most cases more physical contact is tolerated at
all levels and so the world moves on and drags me along. Hooper
was consistent, firm and decisive. Exactly what we all need.
Should Cunha have had a penalty in the 89th minute? Arguably a
foul in the centre of the pitch and this is why Gallagher was
questioned about it this morning. DG felt that it was not a
penalty and was referee's call, not something VAR should get
involved in. So when is a foul in the centre circle not a foul
when committed in the box? Mind you, I am always sceptical about
penalty claims in the last minute - attackers have a desperate
need to score...
Expressing a personal opinion, the Arsenal goal irritates me.
Everyone says that the goalkeeper should be stronger but why
should an attacker move sideways into the goalkeeper when he
isn't in a position to play the ball? Maybe goalkeepers should
get a metre space at corners? I jest by the way.
I am not a fan of either team but I am a "fan" of Hooper. He is
different, a change from the manufactured (excellent) referees
you see like Kitchen and Barrett and there is a personality
visible which comes over during the game. Hooper had a very good
game.

A masterclass in how to referee a game and let two teams play
physically bit without letting things get out of control - and
the game was much better for it. Was consistent and liked the
stepped approach particularly first half. Missed 1 caution for
Maguire second half, and for me its a clear penalty for foul on
Cunha, difficult to spot in real time and not sure what his view
was like
If Saliba doesnt slide in to try and block Cunha has a clear
shot on goal - he takes his leg away before getting a slight
block on the ball

On the replay from behind the goal you could see that his view
was clearly blocked by the players in between and also the foul
was on the "dark side" so he wouldn't have seen the contact.
Definitely one for VAR to recommend an OFR. It would be
interesting if he said that he had seen the incident clearly
because that wasn't apparent from the replay and the position of
the foul.
The defender comes from behind and gets know where near playing
the ball instead playing the man.
Finally what on earth is "foot on foot" contact meaning "no
foul"?

Each passing week I always think to myself Hackett has plummeted
as low as he can with his drivel , each week he seems to still
leave me dumbfounded I would willingly pay for him
to receive the help he needs

As a reminder, Hackett’s idea above amounted to just giving the
same ref (usually Poll) the game each week, even when he made
blunders. No effort to forward plan or develop experience which
resulted in 6 FIFA refs at one point (rather than 10) and a
gaping hole in experience when refs quit / retired. Always
struck me that he was overrun by big, arrogant personalities who
just ruled the roost. Very few refs ever promoted to PL and his
constant distasteful boasting of demoting referees - most of
whom were great when I worked with them. If you were a good,
quiet ref who just got on with the job without all the
big-headed bravado and backstabbing everyone else, you were not
in the mix.

Keith Hackett is entitled to his opinion and if can get paid for
giving it then bully for him. In this instance, as in so many on
which he opines, he is wrong.

Hooper reminds me a little bit of Phil Dowd and Mark Halsey in
terms of his style of refereeing. I think he is a breath of
fresh air away from the generation of droid refs that we have
seen in the ranks for some time now. Hopefully Howard Webb
recognises this and rewards him accordingly.

Inconsistency is easy to say but given how the LOG are being
interpreted at the moment, letting the game flow, allowing
physical contact and so forth, it is not surprising. More
decisions are subjective and it makes it harder for referees to
be absolutely consistent.
