The Future Of SG1
DIR By: dave26

I currently have very little faith for the future of the SG1
referees , with so many of the current SG1 in their twilight
years I fear that apart from Madley, and Jones no one else is
consistently good enough to fulfill the boots of the likes of
Marriner , Dean, Probert etc however I have always been a big
believer that problems and blame start at the top and Mike Riley
and his team have played a big part in the mess created , could
Mike Riley and co have worked harder to get them to level
required ? or are their hands so tied with the lack of quality
the referees are currently showing that they can only pick "the
best" from what they have to work with? or the fact they have
other jobs affecting their ability to referee week in week out ?
Imo the whole system and personnel at the highest level needs a
clearout and a new structure,
sadly UEFA/FIFA seems to be the same way at the moment for some
reason , the Elite list is very limited at the moment and the
appointments would back that up over the years they have
produced some of the finest referees around but currently IMO
seem to be struggling
Tbh I think the next batch of SG referees with the exception of
those I mentioned above might rely heavily on VAR as they don’t
seem to have the level of correct decision making that the likes
of Dean Atkinson etc have but I hope it improves drastically

Allowing SG referees to carry on for as long as they want has
been very damaging to the standards IMO - it is preventing
promising young referees from coming through and developing into
great referees. Secondly, IMO, they are making some poor
choices in the referees they are promoting - Madley should have
been on SG1 years ago, and yet they've promoted the likes of
Scott (OK but never a long term choice at his age) and Hooper
(who doesn't look to be good enough). It would not surprise me
if Jarred Gillett gets promoted within a year or two as he's
easily better than most of SG1 and SG2.

I totally agree with what has been said above. Do we know how
many promotions are going to be needed to cover the introduction
of VAR? Will some retire and be specialist VARs? Will SG2 be
used as fourth officials/VARs to take some of the pressure?
Could well be and interesting summer to see who’s in line for a
step up

It isn't about allowing referees to continue - there is no
choice about that. It is illegal to have a compulsory retirement
age. Simple as that.
I agree with the rest of your post, Scott and Hooper were v poor
decisions for promotion which, even had they gone well, would
have been short term, middling performers - sadly, they're not
even that.
There doesn't appear to be any long term, strategic thinking
about promotions at all (which I think is true throughout the
pyramid tbh).

I think we should hold back on the constant praise of this Gilet
fellow until he has refereed in English football and had the
chance to establish himself on these shores.
He might be a FIFA referee, but I doubt the domestic standard
he's been refereeing at thus far will the same as the
Championship or the Premier League over here.
Gilet might be the best SG2 can get, but in my view, we need to
see more of him in the environment he's going to officiate
before we can make more judgements.

In the UK it might be against contract law - mainland Europe
manage it though. Most countries kick the refs off the top
flight the year they turn 45, no ifs buts or maybes. Hungary did
away with the compulsory retirement age 18 months ago to bring
their policy inline with FIFAs but you only get a 6 month
extension granted at a time, 1 in the spring season, then again
for the winter season & subject to a whole heap of conditions.
Knowing the contract law in this country they should never have
just dished out open ended contracts instead of fixed term ones.
Hungary have 3 year contracts with no guarantee of renewal, even
for the FIFA referees, I think Poland & Romania are fixed term
as well.
I'm not sure the lack of up and coming refs is a problem unique
to the UK, we have the same in Hungary, we have Kassai, Vad &
Bognár retiring in 2-3 years & the only 1 on the NB1 who looks
anywhere near good enough to maybe considered for a FIFA badge
is Gergö Bogár (only promoted this Feb in the spring season to
the NB1) & there is no-one currently in the NB2 who look good
enough for the NB1. Ádám Pillóck is a possibility in time but
can't think of anyone other than him. The 3 younger FIFA refs -
1 is reasonable but very inconsistent, 1 looks very promising &
the other one, well I shall say no more but will point out that
he recently let a team play in yellow with their goalkeeper
wearing yellow along with the opposition goalkeeper wearing
yellow so 12/22 players on the pitch all had the same colour
shirts on & this was in a top league game! That was actually one
of his better moments... The rest of Eastern Europe is similar
judging by some of the chats that I have had so the problem
seems to be wider across Europe. Is it therefore down to maybe
UEFA guidelines/regulations that all Country FAs are following
and the knock on effect has been to leave so many countries in
this position?

I wonder if they have thought of the last day of the season next
year when all ten games are played at the same time.
They'll need six officials per match including VAR officials.
If they use SG1 officials in the VAR booth on every game that's
20 SG1 officials required (assuming they are all fit and
healthy) plus at least 30 SG1 AR officials, and a minimum of 10
SG2 officials to cover the scoreboard duties.
There isn't 10 SG2 officials at present who are competent enough
to take charge of SG1 games IMO.
Looking at these figures....I can't see how this will be
achieved in the current realm of things.

10 SG1 only need to be fit & healthy. Doesn't matter what state
the VAR are in, I think we might see injured officials used as
VAR a lot more frequently now rather than having extended
absences due to injury.

Not sure the planning should be based on how many might be
injured at the time, but I understand your sentiment.
Still requires a minimum of 10 active referees, with the
possibility of some being needed as 4th officials in the most
important games. Then 10 more referees in the video booth. Just
not enough there
Still do not understand why VAR officials have to be current
referees?

I don't think we should get too concerned about the final day of
next season yet!
As mentioned before, it's quite possible that some referees
outside the SG1 will make excellent VARs. Additionally, it is
not uncommon at the moment for SG2 referees to be FO on Premier
League games and presumably their involvement in PL matches will
increase next season. Additionally, it's likely that at least
some of the 10 games on the final day won't have too much riding
on them - perhaps some SG2 referees will even be given 'trial
matches' and RTR will rejoice for the entire summer [emoji1]
