Might just be me but I think some referees would’ve booked the
Birmingham manager. Everytime the camera is on him, and
sometimes the commentators even mention it, he is constantly
shouting or getting angry at the fourth official. Poor Busby
will finish the game with a raging headache.

Thoughts on the penalty? That is a big decision to give that
       handball.
As feared, it’s all kicked off after the penalty and some
disgraceful scenes, and to be honest, it’s been boiling up to a
       flashpoint

Correct penalty imo. Dykes takes a risk having his arm in that
position for so long (very odd position too). He’s unlucky as
he’s not looking at the ball but clearly blocks a pass

I know he may not have started well, but he definitely has
finished better than he started. This will definitely be one of
the most chaotic games of the season, and he has controlled it
fairly well when it has kicked off, in my opinion.

If this is the best referee in the Championship I worry about
the others, Kitchen has been poor from start to finish

Kitchen cannot be blamed for the terrible scenes after the
penalty. Poor from the Ipswich player, smashing the ball into
the crowd but the pushing and shoving went on for far too long.
It needed a good eye to spot that handball and indeed he did
spot it. I can see why he gave it as Dykes’ arms were high above
his head for a while and that is unnatural. His arms were very
slowly retreating but not enough by the time the incident
occurred. When you consider how fast the game moves in real
time, I think the penalty decision is understandable.
Not a great start from Kitchen but slowly got better as the game
       went on.

It was always going to be a difficult game, and a game that
might attract a SG1 referee for the reverse fixture. Andrew
Kitchen will watch that back tomorrow and take both positives
and negatives away from that. Wish him the best for the rest of
the season, although I am very confident that won’t be the last
       time we have him.

Everyone has good and bad games. Probably got a little bit
caught up in the occasion. Opening the championship season in a
great atmosphere between two very good teams. I imagine he felt
a bit of nerves before which maybe filtered into his performance

I think Andrew Kitchen is a better referee than his performance
showed this evening. He got better as the game wore on but the
start was decidedly shaky. Nerves ? Perhaps, quite a
responsibility refereeing the televised opener in the
Championship and he just didn't look assured. There will be much
better ( and some worse ) refereeing performances in the
Championship this season. I know I'm not exactly unbiased but I
thought the penalty was a fair award and a good spot.
The nonsense of the players' behaviour at times was most
disappointing and both clubs should be brought to book for it.
